4 Month Old Night Wakings

Our 4 month old has been sleeping through the night for about 3 weeks now. However, the last 4 nights she wakes up in the middle of the night (usually about 2am) screaming b/c she has rolled herself onto her back and wants back on her belly. We come in, flip her over and she quickly rolls herself back over again. This process goes on and on. We have tried to let her cry it out, but last night she cried from 1:30-4:30am on and off. She finally let me rock her to sleep at 5am and slept until 8am b/c I know she was exhausted. We just have no clue what to do at this point.

What can I do next?

Every mom knows how you feel, please be more patient. She will roll her self over before you'll know it. Please don't let a 4 month to cry it out. When they are so small they communicate through their cry, something is wrong. Is the baby hot, cold, the pjs are too tight, teething, possibly gas if being on her belly is her preference. I hope you will be getting all your sleep you need soon.

A 4 month old is quite young to be 'sleeping thru the night'. A big part of her having trouble falling back to sleep after she jolts herself awake from rolling over could very well be because she has hit a growth sprurt and is hungry. I would try to either breastfeed her or make her a bottle (whichever you are doing). Either way this should help to soothe her back to sleep and when she gets over the growth sprut she will most likely stop waking for the feedings
Good Luck

Can you try to swaddle her and lay her down on her back to begin with? Actually, all babies her age are supposed to be put to bed on their backs to cut down on the risk of SIDS.

It's not a fun stage, but she'll learn how to roll back. Hang in there, and go help her at night. IMO CIO isn't a great method (mostly b/c I can't do it!), but even so, not a good idea until 6mos. Hang in there!

You just have to hang in there and give her what she needs. I know it's hard, but some 4 month olds just don't sleep through the night. Go in, help her, and it will get better eventually. It's an endurance of love. Too sad when they cry it out. She's so young too, if you need to put her bed by yours so that you can help her in the night, that might be another idea....You have to do what works best for you. But crying it out so young is too hard, I think.

if she only rolls one way try getting a positioner and putting it on that side so she can't roll in her sleep.
