4 Month Constipated

Any advice on helping my little one who is constipated? It has been over 2 days now and he is miserable. The doctor said not to worry unless it is over 5 days but he usually goes 2-3 times a day. I tried a q-tip with some vaseline but that doesn't seem to be helping.

Thanks!

Hi,
My name is A. and go by my middle name, Yvette. Try breastmilk or 1/2 baby pear juice and 1/2 water in a bottle. That should do the trick.

my daughter began her constipation at 8 weeks and at 3 months now we are lucky to average a BM once a week. i take her to our chiropractor to balance out her nervous system (no cracking just point holding) i also give her an eye dropper full of flax seed oil and i give her a form of acidopholus (from Metagenics - ultra flora; from Xymogen - probio defense - high quality supplement companies that you get through a chiropractor or holisitc doctor) to strengthen the healthy bacteria of her digestive system. hope that helps =)

Poor guy, here is what I read in regards to infants under 1 year at www.askdrsears.com (to read the whole article, visit the site and click on constipation).

CONSTIPATION IN INFANTS UNDER A YEAR
In addition to the above general tips for preventing and treating constipation at all ages, try these infant-specific tips:
If formula-feeding, experiment with different formulas to find which one is most intestinal-friendly.
Feed baby smaller amounts of formula more frequently, which gives the intestines a better chance to properly digest the formula. An easier rule of thumb is to feed half as much twice as often.
Delay introduction of solid foods, especially more constipating ones, such as rice and bananas. Instead of rice cereal, try barley cereal. Good starter high-fiber foods for constipated infants are pureed pears and prunes.
Ease the passage of stools using glycerin suppositories or liquid glycerin (as described above).
Add one teaspoon of flax oil once a day mixed into baby cereal or baby's bottle.
Watch for about-to-go signs. As soon as your baby begins to grunt, grimace, look bloated, or show signs of straining, quickly insert a glycerin suppository to ease the passage.
The Bath and Bowel Movement Technique
Here is a Sears' family trick that helped us ease the passage of stools in several of our constipated babies. Although it's messy, it works. Immerse your baby in a warm bath so that the water is around chest-high. When your baby is relaxed in the bath, massage baby's abdomen and get ready for the mudslide.

Hi J.,
Poor guy. My little ones use to get constipated alot too. I used mineral oil. I would put a little in their bottle and it worked great within a few hours. Also for the discomfort you could give him a warm bath. You could also lay him on his back, bend his legs and them bring them up to his chest. Do this continuously over and over for a minute or so. My little ones use to release alot of gas when I would do this. I also put them on my lap on a pillow with a towel over a heating pad on low and rubbed their back just to easy the discomfort. This really helped them.
Let me know how it goes. Keep us updated.

ive aslo tryied to q-tip with olive oil be it didnt work.

Do you formula feed? Because, at that age, my son couldn't not drink anything but Carnation formula without getting consitpated. You might try that change if it applies. While we were going through the formula change, the doctor suggested a small amount of dark carol syrup, half an ounce or so, diluted into 4 ounces of water. It helped. :)

Did your doctor actually "diagnose" constipation...or is it that he hasn't pooped in a few days? Often times, an infants pooping can vary from everyday, to every few days. Is he breast for formula fed?

Apple juice every few days. At this point, I would add a little prune juice to it.
