4-Yr Old with Foreign Object Stuck up His Nose!

Yesterday we ended up in emergency room because my 4-yr old stuck a carob seed up his nose. For those of you that are not familiar with this Mediterranean plant, the seed is about 3 times the seed of apple, oval and smooth… something like the size of watermelon seed but fatter (just the right size to plug up those little nostrils!). They could not get it out at the emergency room. At first it could be seen, then, alas, went further up the nose. They sent us home with hopes it might come out on its own (the size of the seed is not a choking hazard) and with the referral to the pediatric hospital. My son is very playful today, slept well, and is a usual day in our household. At times I even forget he has the seed stuck up his nose!!! Of course, I would prefer this seed comes out on its own, as I can imagine the procedure to get it out could be very painful and stressful. Any similar experiences from Moms out there? Any home remedies for this type of situation? Any testimonials of foreign objects coming out of children noses on its own ;), or should we just head out to the hospital before any complications? As always, I value your input – don’t know what I would do without this website!

What can I do next?

When my son was 3 he stuck a game peice up his nose. Went to ENT doctor and they couldn't find it. We had a wait a week to see if it would fall out. The doctor told us to see if his nose starts running from that side and to come back if so. We had to have it removed at the hospital. It was very painless- they gave Versed and took him into the OR and they were able to find it with a scope and pull it right out. I understand it is very stressful!

When my son was about 3 1/2 he started telling me "something stinks in here" I had no idea what he was talking about but he kept insisting. I finally called the pediatrician (I felt a little stupid calling) and she said to bring him in. It turns out he had stuck a piece of foam into his nose and it was infected. I could not smell it but he certainly could. The dr. could not get it out and we had to go to a pediatric ENT who did get it out. Not really a big deal except for the time and money.

The ENT asked how the heck the foam got into his nose. My son told him that when he was sleeping he felt something crawling up his face and into his nose and that's how it must have got there. I don't know about you, but I had a little trouble believing that story (lol). He is now 24 years old and it's fun to remember these type of stories.

I got a large plastic earring backing stuck up my nose as a kid. Similar situation. The ER could not get it out. They send me to a pediatric EENT the next day. The solution was actually quite simple. He had a small vacuum device and with a little saline was able to pull it right out. I hope it's as easy for your wee one.

YES, last month my 4yo, stuck some pink foam type thing up her nose, (its got glitter on one side, and sticky on the other side, it looked like a petal from a flower, sounds about the same size as yours) at first I thought her nose was swollen inside, because when I shined a light up there, it was just pink, si I was freaking out. But my huband held her lips shut, told her to blow hard, and it flew out on its own...

My cousin had an affinity for sticking things up her nose. She finally got something stuck that she couldn't get out. She was afraid to tell her parents, so she kept it secret. Well, the skin in her nose grew to the plastic bead and became horribly infected. They did take her to the ER and they had to do minor surgery to remove it all. Even with the surgery, she was up and running the next day.

Poor little guy. Hopefully the vacuum option will work. :)

Have him smell pepper then when he goes to sneeze...cover his mouth. Or cover mouth and do the Hemlick easily....forcing air out his nose.

Do you think the nosefrida or whatever that is to suck the snotty boogers out of babies might work....Just a thought! Otherwise, I'd find a good ENT. we've had success getting things out of the ears, by putting a baby laxative in the ear and having them lay on their side for about 20 minutes and then it just fell out. This was after the ENT attempts were unsuccessful and there was talk of putting him under.

Good Luck hope you find a resolution interested in knowing what worked....I'm sure we'll have a fair share nose plugs soon enough!

I have a friend who had a child put peas up the nose and it made a terrible smell and they had to be taken out finally. Then grandson's put things up the nose not long ago and the hospital got them out and didn't leave them in. I would go have it removed now and not leave it in there at all. They can be removed at the hospital where you were told to go. WHY do they put things up their noses?????

Has he tried blowing his nose? I say that in all seriousness. Unless the doctor said NOT to, I would have him try it.

My son, around that same age, ended up with (just don't know HOW it got there, lol) a little clear button thing up his nose. It was a plastic clip off the blinds cord. :( Go figure how he got one off the cord and up his nose, right?

So anyway, I really didn't think he had anything in his nose, because when I tried to look, the thing was clear plastic. It just looked a little shiny way up in there. LOL

I had him use one finger to hold the other nostril closed and asked him to blow hard out his nose. It flew right out! (good thing I stepped back before he blew). Now, this little button thing was smaller than what you sound like you are describing, so if your doctor said don't blow, then obviously don't. Also, when my son blew, I could still see a tiny bit of the object...so it wasn't completely inside his sinus....it was still lodged in the nostril, just waaaaayyy up there.

It may not work, obviously. But if it does for you like it did for us, it'll save you another doctor visit and possibly surgery. :/

Try giving him a stool softener today, that should help ease the stress and/or pain that might accompany the movement.

We've been there. Our 3 yr old stuck a bead in her nose...Emergency didn't help...their own solution was to put her out. We decline. Go to ENT, check yelp for a good one in your area. If interested email me, i'll find the name of the one we went to. He used a hook to remove the bead. It took 5 people to hold her down, and she was screaming...but hey, the bead was out in 15 min after 2 days of agony of living with the bead.

Also you can check on the internet there's this maneur you can do, when you close the nostril that doesn't have a seed with your fingers and gently blow air in your child's mouth...that should make the seed come out...but you have to blow supre gently otherwise it can bady affect their lungs..you can google for it on the net...we were so desperate, we tried it...but in our case, in emergency they moved the bead very deep into her nose, and it didn't help.

Also i heard a friend removing a bead from the child's nose with a vacuum...but i probably wouldn't be brave enough to try it...my advice go to a very good ENT!

Well.... when my brother was little, he stuck a button up his nose. Mom took him to the doctor, who could not find it. No one ever saw it fall out, and no one saw it again. I am sure it fell out on its own, but we like to joke that my brother has a button lodged somewhere in his brain and that's what his problem is.

I would watch for signs of infection and discomfort. And if you have not tried it, definitely go with the suggestions you've received about blowing his nose hard.

Good luck!

watch for a running nose and a horrible smell coming from his nose or breath for the next week or so.

If those happen then the seed is still up there and they will have to remove it.

If you don't see those symptoms then you should be able to assume that it found its way out.

Im so glad that my daughter is out of that stage! I have taken 4 things out of her nose myself and had to go to the Dr to have 2 different things taken out. One time she had her sinus cavity on one side full of couch cushion... what makes them do this I will never know.

Last summer my daughter (3 yr old) stuck one of those little pebbles used for bamboo plants up her nose. Totally freaked me out. I could not get it out and did not even want to think what th edoc would do. I figured i would wait just a bit. The thing went up a little farther. She went outside and was jumping around. It fell out. I spent about 20 minutes looking for it in the grass becaue all I could think of was it going all the way in. I think it helped her nostrils were moist and not real dry. The moisture helped it slip out. If you can, have him blow his nose like suggested already or have him do a bunch of jumping jacks.
