4 1/2 Year Old Boy Still Wets at Night

My son will be 5 in April and still wets a pull-up every night. He will occasionally even have a bowel movement in his sleep. He is mature for his age in other ways, and hasn't had a daytime accident in over a year. We have made small efforts to try it without the pull-up every 4 months or so with no success. This doesn't seem to be a mind game or comfort issue with him. It seems that he just doesn't wake up (or doesn't want to). Half the times we went without a pull-up he wet himself and slept right through it. The other half he came to get me to clean him up. I waver between thinking he just needs more time and wondering if his time has passed and I am solidifing this habit. I'm considering trying those wet sensing buzzers. Does anyone have any experience with this or any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Hi K.. I have a son who is going to be 8 in August and he still wears the good nights. It is a lot more common a problem then we used to think it was. We have tried all the things, waking him up at night, not letting him drink after a certain time but he is a very heavy sleeper and I was told he will grow out of it eventually. The bad thing about my situation is my daughter who is 3 1/2 doesn't have the problem and has been out of pull ups for about a year and a half and I think it makes my son feel bad knowing she doesn't have the problem but he does.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

I made a post in there (J. S) and would love for you to read it.... It's about using homeopathic remedies to help your son get over the hump on his potty issues.
Best of luck!

My son is almost 7 and still wets the bed. It is b/c his brain doesn't yet produce the chemical to slow down the production of urine at nite. he is now on a med to try to help him. I wet the bed until i was 11.

My son just turned 5 and we have the same issue. His pediatrician told me it is not considered a developmental delay until he is 7, so try not to make a big deal out of it. It may be a big deal and he is trying and feels bad and that can make the situation worse. I am trying not to think about it, but it is hard. But, all I can say is to try to let nature take it's course. My cousin's son, when he was 7, used one of those bed monitor things and that worked for him. I am a little skeptical though...

Hi K., i have three sons. hang in there ,it will stop and he will make it though the night(some time). keep the pull ups going and just dont tell other mom's it will make your life easier, and you dont need the judgement. try a little extra time in the day with him alone, see he needs some mom alone time? my middle guy sure did. good luck!!! my boys are old now and i really enjoyed them and still do.(25, 22, 19yrs) J.*

Wow, and I thought I was the only one with a 5 almost 6 yr old with the same problem.
He wears the goodnights and sure enough by morning it's full.
I think it's because he just sleeps so well through the night, he doesn't give it a 2nd thought about getting up to "take care of business".
I was also considering those "buzzer" thingeys.... But now I think i'll bring it up at his 6yr old well baby appt., to see what the dr. says.

Hi K.,
I'm a mom of a 12yr old who just last yr stopped having accidents. First, when I mentioned it to the ped he asked if we had any history of bedwetting in our families. And the answer was yes on both sides of our family. I know my husband's brother wet the bed for quite a long time. Then my doc said he will eventually grow out of it. We bought pull-ups for a loooong time. Not to discourage you, but we just let nature takes it's course and it stopped. He is also a very deep sleeper. It takes me FOREVER to get him up in the mornings for school. Hope this helps!

My middle son turned 6 last august and he still wears goodnight to bed. He wakes up in the morning and they always have something in them. My ped says he doesn't like to do anything about it until they are atleast 7 years old. We don't make a big deal about him needing the goodnights. I keep them in his drawer next to his PJ's.

K., Have you tried not giving him anything to drink after a certain time at night? There also is a pill that helps with that problem. When my kids were still home, a friend had that problem with her daughter & when she spent the night, she would take that pill & wouldn't pee to bed. I don't remember what the name of the pill was, but you need to talk to your doctor & things will definatly get better for you & your son.
Good luck K. !! You are definatly a busy mom !
