3Yr Old Having Nightmares from Thomas Tank Engine Story (Percy's Ghost Train)!

Our 3 yr old recently watched (at a cousin's house) the story of "Percy's Ghostly Train" (see it on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihZgM6jBttc) and he has been having nightmares ever since. Anyway, he used to sleep beautifully at night with no problems and now he wakes up screaming several times at night from this nightmare. He says "the moon woke him up and scared him." We isolated the source of his nightmares to the "Percy's Ghostly Train" episode of Thomas the Tank engine (there is a scary looking moon on that episode along with scary music). Can ANYONE please offer ANY advice on what to do to help our baby get over this? My husband and I are exhausted from getting up multiple times to sooth him. One of us eventually ends up having to sleep with him all night. This is a habit we don't want to encourage but he's absolutely panic sticken and it would be cruel to let him cry. (We tried that to no avail). This is our first experience with nightmares. What have other parents done in situations like these? Should we watch the episode with him and explain it?

What can I do next?

I know which episode you are talking about. My four year old loves Thomas. I remember watching it and Andrew said it was kinda scary. We watched it again a few days later and I started saying silly stuff about the moon and music. For example: That moon sure does look silly, or I really love to dance to this music and do a stupid/silly dance. My son has never had nightmares about Thomas, but my husband accidently (yeah, right!) let him watch the shark on Jaws eat the man and Andrew had nightmares about sharks coming to eat him. We watched it again and when the shark eats the guy I asked Andrew if he thinks the man tasted like chicken to the shark and do you think he needs a toothpick? Andrew looked at me very strangly and then got a smile on his face and said, no, I guess he tasted like a french fry and you are a very silly mommy. No more nightmares!

Good luck!

When my son had a nightmare we had him draw a picture of what scared him. Then we tore it up. It gave him the feeling that it was gone and couldn't hurt him since he tore it up. hope this helps

When our son gets scared while watching something, we just say things like "oh, they're so silly!" or "that's just pretend!"....so maybe if you watch it again with him, and make light of the scary parts, he will think that it is not so scary after all!
Hope this helps!

My husband went through a similar situation with his 1st child some years ago. He made a sign to keep the monsters away with his daughter and they posted it on her door to keep them out and it worked. I would say if you could do something similar for your child that he could be involved in - write a letter together to the moon, make a sign, whatever - to help him ease his fears it might work. Good luck!

I'm 37 with 3 teenagers, when they were little and had nightmares I would either tell them a story (quickly) about candy and gingerbread houses to give them something else to think and dream about. Sprinkle fairdust(silver glitter in a cute container) before sleep, or if worse came to it....catch the factious monster in a brown lunch bag and scream "I got him" and throw it in the garbage outside (of course).
