My son is 3 yr old and he suddenly stopped walking since 20 days and we took him to neurologist they did MRI,blood, xray for hips and urine tests all came normal. Can you please tell me if any one faced similar kind of issue and were you able to diagnose the problem ? Thanks for your help!!!

Christie , we are not noticing any stiffness like Pai, Stiffness, Twitching,Eye movements, only thing is he is little shaky and when he stands up and tries to put his leg he is not steady and falling down . he is prefeering to crawl . He has speech delay so little delay with development so he couldnt express what's going with him . We got him checked with couple of nuerologists his refluxes everything was fine . All the tests they did came normal . He didnt have any cold or fever recently . To see the kid struggling like that is very painful for us

So What Happened?

My son got tested for sinal tap and the tests are normal for that too and also couple of tests done to check viral infection they were normal too. Now they are asking us to do EMG test but in the hospital one of the neurologist is pretty sure that EMG test will also be normal . We are scheduled for EMG for now

My daughter's friend had an experience like what B describes. She, too, got sick suddenly and couldn't walk in first grade. It was almost a year that she was wheelchair bound and they traced it to a virus. She eventually got better and walks perfectly well today at age 12.

My daughter woke up one day when she was 3 and couldn't walk. She said her knee hurt but we knew she did not injure it. They tested her for a bunch of stuff including childhood arthritis. Turns out she had Lymes disease. Motrin took the inflammation away and she was able to walk after 2-3 days although she was on antibiotic for 28 days.

3 weeks is a long time. Did the doctor tell you next steps?

Happened to my nephew at almost 3. Turned out to be a virus. Three weeks seems like a long time. Did you take him to a children's hospital? If not, I would collect his records and head for one.

I have no idea what it could be.
BUT,
You HAVE TO continue to push the doctors to investigate more. Don't let them send you away, don't let them tell you he will grow out of it. Now days it seems that we MUST advocate for ourselves and our kids. Take charge. Demand answers. I would probably take him to a Children's Hospital that is near you.

I heard of someone who was about 8 yrs old who suddenly couldn't walk.
They were beside themselves trying to figure it out.
Finally one specialist determined it was a bone virus which was causing the problem but there was no treatment for it.
For 6 months the kid was wheelchair ridden.
And then all of a sudden it cleared up and he just got up and walked just fine.

Yeah, this isn't enough information. What are his other symptoms? Pain? Stiffness? Twitching? Eye movements? Tell us more.

There can be a virus in the muscles....just heard if that recently.

It sounds like you may have received all of this care via the ER? If so, you need to get him to his pediatrician ASAP for further investigation.

Good luck!

Has he been tested for Guillain-Barre Syndrome? Granted, the symptoms for this syndrome are a little more extreme than what you are describing, but it couldn't hurt to have it checked out.

I'm so sorry to see that your little guy is struggling. This must be very scary for you! I would go back to the children's hospital and have him re-evaluated. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I would ask the doctor to check him for Guillain-Barre Syndrome. To do this they have to do a spinal tap. Not something you want done but it's really the only way to find out for sure. If it is Guillain-Barre Syndrome there is no cure, but there is treatment. With treatment, most, if not all, symptoms can be reversed.

Did they test him for Scarlet Fever? Does he have a history of getting strep?

My nephew has juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. He takes injections and some kind of medication for it and at the moment it is in remission. He is doing great but it's something you have to keep on top of your whole life. It turns out when he was a toddler/preschooler and everyone thought he was such an impossible kid...he was just in pain! This is something to get checked for if you have not already.
