hi S., my son is almost 4 and still uses his hands a lot of the time. i thnk both of the other replies you got are great, give him foods he likes that he needs a utensil for, let him choose the utensil, and otherwise, dont make an issue of it. my son loves to rummage around and find weird things to eat his yogurt with, he will use a coffee scoop, baby spoons, giant serving spoons, basically whatever he thinks will get a reaction out of me, so i laugh and tell him he is so crazy and he loves that and uses the utensils, which is just fine with me. it wont last forever.

My son is 2 1/2. He has utensils with Sponge Bob and Thomas the Train on them, that is a BIG help. He gets frustrated because eating with his hands is much more efficient than trying to use his fork/spoon.
I take his spoon and get a good bite of food on it, and put the spoon down on his plate. He will then pick up the spoon and feed himself whatever is on it.
Sometimes he with then try to scoop more food, and I just help him a little bit.
I would offer lots of soups, yogurts, pudding, etc to encourage spoon usage.
Oh and Ice Cream...My son always uses a spoon for that because his fingers get cold, otherwise. lol

I just want to share that this is only temporary, it will pass. I think my oldest was like this. He's now 10 and uses silverware. From the sounds of it, he's still very young. You can give him finger foods and keep encouraging him of how to use them. Keep it fun and non-punishing. I"d love to hear the other replies.
