3 Year Old with "Neck Hurting" Followed by Throwing Up

My daughter is 3 years old. She has been complaining of her neck hurting for almost a year. It seems to almost happen around the same time of the day (4 pm) and she doesn't stop complaining, and she will ask you to rub it. After rubbing it, giving her water, and her crying that it hurts, she will throw up. She will just lay there for a while, 30-60 minutes, then she throws up again. By the time she is finished throwing up the second time, it is always around dinner time, she sits at the table, eats her dinner and then she gets ready for bed. And that's it. She did it again yesterday, except after she threw up, she laid on the couch and was out cold. We tried waking her up, and nothing. Sometimes she will go months with out it happening, other times just a couple of weeks. I've talked to the doctor about it more times then I can count, and she suggested giving her tylenol.
The doctor has finally decided to give her a CAT scan and CT scan. I am just worried. What could it be? She is so young.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for all of your support! It's nice to know that there are so many people that care and are willing to give me advice. And for those of you in Okinawa, I'm so happy that I found this website, it's nice to know there are people willing to help and get to know other people. I will keep you all posted on what happens next week. And I will continue to keep fighting for my daughter and get her every possible test there is. Thanks!

I have a 12 year old that has been suffering from migraines since he was 5. He gets a headache, and starts vomiting and most of the time it completely knocks him out for the day, but when he wakes up it's all better. It might be possible that your daughter is getting headaches at the base of her skull and the best way she can describe it is neck pain. My son takes meds at the onset of the pain and sometimes it will stop the progression of pain to vomiting but most times he goes thru the whole process. Just a thought.....but a ct will help to diagnose if it is migraines.....

that would be worrying indeed, and it really could be any number of things from something in her mind to a tumor, but don't worry too much, it doesn't really help anything :)

as for the docs on Oki, I know it can be hard sometimes to get their attention but I know that there are good docs here and that once they get going on it they'll do what they can. if it goes beyond their scope you'll get a free trip to Hawaii to visit the hospital there.

we'll pray for you

Poor baby! I am so sorry she is suffering like that. I am praying that the cause will be found. Just continue doing what you are doing and use that great medical service to get your daugther(and you)some relief. Let me know what happens.

I pray the doctors eyes and ears are opened to your concerns and that their minds are opened to receive new wisdom and understanding about what could be going on with your daughter.
Definitely don't give up fighting for her. If they don't listen to you, ask for help from the patient advocates too.
Most importantly, give this whole situation to God. Put your trust in him. He is the ultimate physician and will do mighty things if you ask him to help.
I stand in agreement with you for your daughter's health and healing. There are many scriptures in the bible that you can pray with to help you all through this time. I can send them to you if you want or you can seek out your local chaplain.
Blessings and peace,
H.

Wow. I've never heard anything like that. I don't have any suggestions or clues, but I think you need to be very assertive with the doctor and demand some action. I think it's great they're finally doing some scans. I don't think this would be normal for anyone, much less a 3yo. I find that when my 3yo daughter complains of pain or discomfort she is serious and not attention-seeking. Good luck!

Hi C.,
That sounds scary, could it be some kind of seizure? I would definitley keep on the doctors to get it checked out. Unfortuantely, in military medicine you have to be your own child's advocate and never take "no" for an answer and be willing to put up a fight for your child because they do not always want to do the necessary things to help--just what is easy. I had a similair experience when my son was born almost 3 years ago and I kept fighting for him and they finally gave into me to get the help he needed--he has come a very long way because of the help. So good luck to you!

Hi C.,
I don't want to frighten you but a friend's daughter who lived on Okinawa last year had Japanese encephalitis. My friend took her daughter to the hospital several times for headaches, neckaches and vomiting. After several months they figured out that it was Japanese encephlatis/ meningitis. Make sure that they test for these two diseases. If you have been up north at all she may have been exposed. Anywhere near the pig farms in Okinawa there are alot of mosquitos and it is not uncommon for them to carry the Japanese encephlaitis virus. As military dependants we are not always offered this vaccine. Our spouses had to have it but it is not manditory nor is it offered. If we, as dependants want the vaccine, however, we can ask for it.
You are doing the right thing by being proactive. I will keep your baby girl in my prayers. I am also on Okinawa and if you need a friend please don't hesitate to contact me.

I am not a Dr. but I am a mom and I know from expreience dealing with Military Drs can be difficult. My advice to you would be to fight for your daughter. You are the only person who knows her and what is normal. You have to let the DR. know that you are concerned and that if they ignore your concerns, you will go above their head.

Good luck!
