Hi Ladies,
This may be a strange question, but has anyone else had trouble with their children having lots of gas? My youngest is 3 years old and has gas all the time!!! I have taken her to the doctor for it, but didn't really learn anything. When she was at the doctors office they took an x-ray of her stomach and there was so much air in it that it even shocked her doctor. They suggested that we take her off of milk and milk products, thinking that she could be lactose intolerant since her sister is. This hasn't seemed to work. They also tested her for giardia, but the test came back negative. She isn't constipated, so that isn't it either. Her breath also tends to be sour smelling. I have no idea what could be causing this or what to do about it. If anyone has dealt with this please let me know.

What can I do next?

If you are feeding her anything with Splenda in it, that is the cause of the gas......it causes more gas than anything I have ever eaten.

Does he drink with a straw? if so, this is one way we acquire excess air in a abdomen so i would have him stop drinking through one.
I am a family nurse practitioner and have personally seen this as a result of excess air through a straw.
Hope this helps.

I'd say try yogurt. And it isn't just the lactose - certain vegetables and fruits can cause gas. And with care and special attention try a 1/2 tsp of baking soda in water and have her drink that occasionally. She'll burp, but it is not something you want to overdo. My daughter too has the candida problem and she's had yogurt since she was 2. And the sugar is a big problem with that, oh and any antibiotics. She also cannot drink carbonated drnks.

Try the yogurt, like the other Moms suggested, but I would call a pediatric GI docotor and get a second opinion.

In the meantime Mylicon drops can help with the gas, and have her brush her teeth and tounge real well for the sour breath.

Have you tried what our family calls, "Loaded Yogurt"? It's the yogurt with Active Cultures.

It helps my gassy daughter when her gas smells extaordinarily bad.

Hi M.,

I have always heard that if some has chronic bad breathe (i.e. not from eating foods like garlic or onions) that they have intestinal problems. I'd continue to pursue this. My children and I have celiac-sprue, which is an intolerance to gluten. Gluten is in wheat, rye, barley, and oats in this country because it is milled in the same facility as wheat. That can cause intestinal problems. You can have her tested, but an easy way to find out is to take gluten out of her diet for a week or so.

Hope this helps.

Those all seem to be symptoms of a candida infection. Check her tongue for any sores or a "cotton mouth" appearance. Sometimes, it can be very mild, and just looks a little "furry". Does she crave sugary snacks and sweets. I'm finding doctors can be a little shady on the issue, but the "conventional" method of treatment carries a warning of terminal side effects, so I'm more comfortable treating my little one with products from Akins. If you get a possitive dx(her dentist can help with that), they have several probiotics and a colostrum chewable that can help. You'll have to cut her sugar consumption (this means all types (esp. sorbitol, fructose and all the "bad" ones), as the candida feed on sugar. I know this may be hard since there's sugar in EVERYTHING processed for children. Also, a lot of starchy foods can be an issue. Here is the best site I've found so far on the issue: www.yeastinfectionadvisor.com. I hope this helps & good luck :}

M., If the probiotics route doesn't work, I would take her to a holistic dr. that does food allergy testing by blood work. I wasn't a big believer but in the last 5 years I have seen this test reveal allergies that the traditional skin prick didn't. These findings have changed peoples lives. even adults who had suffered with stomach, headache, congestion issues their entire lives that are now suddenly over. Good luck there is nothing more frustrating that trying to help our babies. I would also take her to see Dr Sharma in TUlsa, He is the only pediatric infectious disease dr in the area. What a great guy. ###-###-####. He is very diligent yet doesn't "over Doctor" his patients. My son loves him. Good luck and let us know what works.

If you let her drink pop try stopping that.Also straws cause more gas than not using straws. Maybe the bacteria isnt right in her stomach and you could try yogurt with live bacteria? If she loses weight,has diarrhea or nausea you should definately take her back to the doctor for some tests or another doctor who takes it more seriously.GOOD LUCK!!
