I started noticing a few months ago that my 3 year old daughter has a stinky odor under her arms. It goes away after her bath but the next day come bath time she smells again. Not really wanting to use deodorant because she's so young. Has any one else experienced this and if so what did you do for it? I was going to see what y'all said before I made an appointment with her pedi. Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your help. She does drink a ton of milk and I recently switched to organic because I thought that the hormones had a lot to do with the odor. I'm going to go ahead and make her a doctors appointment just to be safe. Thanks again!!

I would have her checked:

Could be excess hormone levels (can be checked with blood or saliva testing)

Ketoacidosis (diabetes) would also have a fruity breath

phenylketonuria

overactive thyroid (sweating) and that could be due to a malfunctioning adrenal gland.

Liver or kidney disease (should be ruled out with blood tests).usually these diseases are due to a malfunctioning adrenal gland.

parasties

metal poisoning

heavy hormone ingestion in milks and meats

body having a hard time with metabolizing fats and protiens (adrenal deficiency is the cause)

I will go one step further, because my daughter at 3 1/4 yro started developing breast buds. She drinked no hormone milk, no soy (which is in a lot of lotions and food, no lavender (also in a lot of bath products), no tea tree oil....there are things called phytoestrogens. They are found in a lot of natural foods, and 'cosmetics' I would limit these as well. Hormones are also found in meat. I would find a local butcher and see if their cows are treated with growth hormones, or if you can, buy meat from a farmer's market. I assume you are in KC area? Bichelmeyer's near I-70 and 7th street is where we go now. KC is LOADED with farmer's markets...just not now :(

Just an addendum to J.'s post...

Organic milk does not necessarily last longer. The pasteurization process is what determines the shelf life of milk. Ultra-pasteurized milk lasts longer because all the bacteria (and some of the nutrition) have been killed off.

Organic milk is definitely the milk of choice, but if you can buy organic milk that's not ultra-pasterized your child will get more nutritional benefits from it.

Have the same problem with my 2y/o daughter. Saw a dermatologist and prescribed antibacterial solution and it does help. But what i use also instead of body wash I started using a mild bar soap to washunder her arms.

I would go ahead and make that appointment with the pediatrician. Deodorant isn't appropriate for a preschooler, and if she has body odor, there's likely a cause. It isn't typical for a child this age to have underarm odor. Good luck

J.,
My son was a little older when this happened to him.
You might think this is nuts...but what kind of milk does he drink?

Someone on this board suggested that I start giving my son organic milk, and guess what? It has never happened again!
Regular (non-organic) milk has a lot of hormones in it. Organic does not. It also lasts a lot longer (check the dates!) so less goes to waste in our house.
I've also started buying all-natural beef and chicken as well.
Give it a try for a week or two.
Good luck!

Hi J.:

"Bad" body odor can indicate a build up of undigested food within the body. Her diet will need to be addressed, along with other digestive support, such as, putting the right enzymes back into the body to help proper assimilation of food.

Take care,
