3 Year Old with an Ear Issue

My 3 year old grandson keeps hitting at his one ear with the palm of his hand until it makes a noise-which is coming from his nose. It is very strange--he never did this until a few months ago when he had double ear infections. He has one tube that is still in and one has come out. My daughter has taken him to see an ENT, the pediatrician twice, along with other specialists. Everyone states that his ears look great. Has anyone had this problem --we are getting frustrated and feel that his ear has to have some sort of a problem. Thanks moms--you're the best.

i have to say the same thing as the 1st mom. my daughter was on and off sick for months and the pediatrican couldnt give me a reason why... I ended up going to many diff docs and settling for a Naturopathic Doctor and we took her off cows milk and she has been in GREAT health EVER since... just a thought.

Maybe I'm just not understanding the question, but it sounds to me like maybe he just likes the noise that it makes when he does that?! If he's not complaining of pain and the doctors say it looks fine, then I wouldn't really worry. Kids that age are totally into making weird noises and such, so I would just listen to him. If he's not upset, I wouldn't worry.

Get him off of cow's milk immediately which excascerbates ear problems and infections.

If his ears look great when the docs look in them- Why are they leaving the tube in? maybe it's time to take the tubes out. Maybe it's wiggling around in there or out of place and it's tickling or something.

also consider probiotics. could help with prevention of ear infections.

This hitting the ear thing could just be what is called "phantom" ear pain. I took my son to the doctor because said his ear hurt. The pedie said that it was "phantom" pain. I guess from so many infections. Weird, but it occurred from time to time until he got older and outgrew the whole thing.

Is anyone doing a tympanogram? Not sure of the spelling anymore. My now almost 20 year old was a chronic ear infection kid and had to have 3 sets of tubes. They always looked "normal" but what we found out was that the fluid build up behind the tube was so thick it a) couldn't drain and b) would take a while to build up until there was a problem. Only when they did a tympanogram, and our pediatrician had one in his office did they figure out he was holding fluid behind the tubes and still causing problems.

Good Luck.
