Oh the joys of kids & their poop issues :-) Just to prepare you - THIS IS SOOO GROSS!!! But then again, I think almost all bodily fluids are gross. Anyway, our 3 year old is having bm issues - again. When she was smaller she would have such a hard time "getting it out" and would literally cry while going, we got that under control & as long as she eats yogurt every other day or has a small glass of apple juice (approx. 2 oz.) then she is fine & has no issues at all...until last week. She is potty trained while awake & hasn't had a bm accident in at least 6 months. Early in the week she literally could not make it to the bathroom a couple of times and went all over herself so I thought maybe she had a little bug (she felt fine otherwise). Three days in a row she spent A LOT of time on the toilet & her bm was super runny - pretty much watery and bright green. I started thinking about what she had been eating and realized that she had some cereal that is not normally available so thought that may be it = no more cereal. She got a bit better, a day or two of normal bms and then Sunday night she exploded all over herself again followed by yesterday where she went in her pullup during nap - she hasn't had a bm during nap in probably 5 - 6 months. What gives? I've been rethinking everything she has been eating/drinking. I've cut out all juice so now it's just water & milk (1 glass of milk a day). The only thing different about what she has been eating is that she has discovered clementines & has been eating them a lot lately. Anyone have any ideas on how to get this under control?
Uggghhh...sorry if there are typos, the window is jumping & I can't see what I am doing!!!!
Thanks for your help :-)

So What Happened?

Thanks for your input - I had a feeling it might be the clementines doing it so I'll give her bananas instead. Hopefully this will pass soon - she is fine otherwise; not feeling bad or anything. Thanks again!

I would take milk/dairy products out of her diet for 2-3 weeks. It is the typical cause of constipation/diarrhea. She can also be allergic to vitamin C in the tangerines.

We use the probiotics from Simplexity-bifidus for his age group- get the flora in his intestine balanced, and this problem should go away.
Is he hydrating enough?

I don't think the probiotics are a big deal - Activia was advertising that and the FDA climbed all over them and hit them with a big fine for claiming it help digestion. In the short tun, BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) help diarrhea. And the citrus could be upsetting her - lots of fiber in those clementines. I wouldn't let her overload on any one category - that's probably the problem. Really balance it out between carbs, protein, fats and so on. She could have a little bug going on - if she's had a cold, the mucus drip can add to upset in the digestive tract.

I would take her to Dr. Joseph Cannizzarro in Longwood. He is familiar with these issues. Also you could ask the naturopath at nativeremedies.com You can email your questions. Sounds like this problem has been going on for awhile. You need to get to the actual cause.

The clementines have a double whammy--fruit/fiber AND vitamin C. Extra vitamin C can cause the runs for anyone, so just keep that in mind with the overall amount she is getting.

I would take her to the doctor if it were me. My daughter did this and I took her to the doctor right away. What we discovered was that she was allergic to the #10 yellow dye and anything orange. She was also allergic to oranges, carrots and anything that was orange. So it could be the citrus causing the problem.. Even though she wasn't allergic to it as a baby she became allergic. Then at around six or seven years of age she out grew it. I would start a food journal and write down everything she is eating as the doctor will probably want to know. Also, the yogurt could be causing this. I had problems with bm's after eating yogurt every other day. It works in some people like a natural laxative. Stop the yogurt and see if it helps. But for sure contact her doctor.

The cereal which can have dyes added to it can turn the bm's a different color. she could have a virus in her intestinal track and it could be giving her diarreha. I would feed her foods to help bind her like bananas, rice, apples and toast other wise known as the brat diet. I would give her some yogurt also like yo baby or activia which will help get the digestive tract back to normal.

I'd say cut back on the fruit just for a couple of D.. If my kids eat too much of ANY fruit, they will have very runny poop. Try adding bananas to her diet too. That should work. If you're worried it could be something else, you can always just put in a call to her doc. Hope she feels better!

a lot fo kids are sensitive to citrus. looks like that is the problem here. id cut those out or limit her to one a day. also instead of yogurt give her probiotics or add to yogurt to restore friendly flora since the runs would have greatly disturbed the balance in her gut, and you may not end up with a kid with constipation.

I know the problem's solved, but I do want to repeat that it's the amount of clementines--the vitamin C and fiber in them will cause anyone to have troubles if they eat enough. I usually limit my three-year-old to half a clementine and give it to him with something more binding, like a banana or a good helping of a starch. It's amazing what an effect food can have on our bodies.
