My little niece is 3 weeks old and still has her days and nights mixed up. Wondering what other Mamasource moms have done to try to get the baby to sleep at night? I know my brother and sister-in-law would appreciate any help and sleep they can get. Thanks in advance for any ideas!!

What can I do next?

This works well, but it's not popular advice. Her parents are going to have to wake her up during the day. They don't need to keep her up all day, but they do need to wake her for at least 20-30 minutes every 2-3 hours. Change her diaper, play with her, tap her feet or run a gentle finger up and down her spine, whatever it takes. When it's night time, they lay her down (even if she's wide awake) in a dark room and leave. There is no need for a nightlight. She's not afraid of the dark yet because she just spent the last nine months in pitch black.

When she does wake up at night, only turn on as much light as you need to find her, nurse her and change her - maybe a light in the hall and the door left open a crack or turn on a nightlight. Don't play or talk, just nurse and change diaper quietly and lay her back down in totally dark, quiet room and leave.

Good luck,
S.

Getting your child to sleep at night and not during the day can be quite an ordeal. Most ped Dr's say try keeping your child awake more during the day by playing with them, talking or stimulating them so that by night time they are ready to sleep. While this may take awhile it is what I used on my children. Good luck!

Hi C. O

My name is D. L and I have been married for 28years now and the mother of three aged 27, 26 & 17. I recalled giving them sweet sugar water to drink and rocking them to sleep. That makes them sleep for a long period. I would also put them on my tummy to lie down and when they fell asleep, then I would put them in their bed and tried to catch a sleep myself until they got up.

You can probably try that and email me at ____@____.com

this is normal, and typical. baby will figure it out, just try to do things as you normally would, and never force an infant to cry it out. babies NEED to eat at night - their tummies are only the size of their fist, and they are going to DOUBLE their height and TRIPLE their weight in their first year. hopefully this is the only time in their lives that they will grow that fast.

www.askdrsears.com has great info about sleep. but like i said, infants need to eat often. its just the way it is. its hard, and exhausting, but its normal baby behavior.
