Hello Moms,
I didn't want to update this yet so I am going to write this in now. My own pediatrician advised it is okay for me to give her rice cereal just alittle bit. My daughters diaherrea started way before the cereal even started. We were trying to give her rice to make the stool alittle harder. She has been on rice water and it has been helping so anyone please understand my pediatrician already knows what is happening.

I have a 3 month old that has a bad case of diarrehea. The first 2 months she was very colic and I thought it was just being spoiled but it ended up being she could not digest enfamil lipil. I brought her to the pediatrican and he gave me similac alimentum(hyperallergenic formula). The next day diarrehea started and it has been 9 days and still going strong. I brought her back to the doctor and they put her on soy formula. She was on that for two days and would not drink it. Brought her back again she was crying so much the soy must of not been working. He put her back on nutrimegen(another hyperallergenic formula). She has been on it for one full day and I am hoping for some good results. My doctor said its okay to give her rice water and plus we already been giving her cereal. If anybody has any suggestions on what I can possibly do to help my baby out. I don't know I am concerned.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Okay it is tuesday and no diarrehea. We have given her rice cereal with rice water and bottles of rice water. I also went back and gave her the enfamil lipil because I don't believe it was the formula that cause the diarrehea. I just believe that I really didnt dress her appropriate and she just caught a really bad stomach cold. thanks moms for all your help

With all the food changes so quickly it might be due to that but I would still call my doctor and tell them what is going on. Babies can get dehydrated really quickly and easily so be careful and watch her carefully. A.

My daughter also had diarrehea for long periods of time as an baby. She ended up being celiac, unable to digest gluten. Frustrating time until we got a general diognois as a baby before it became more apparent as she became school age.

So frustrating, glad that the rice has been helping!

be sure to keep her well hydrated. babies that age can turn quickly with serious diarrehea. If her eyes appear sunken or her lips dry or she's listless, take her to the hospital right away. She could have also picked up an intestinal bug, which is really hard on babies that age. Sometimes it is hard to tell because babies that age usually have a little looser stool. Ask your pedietrician if it is oK to mix a little plain pedialite with her formula (replace an oz of water with pedialite when mixing it.) I used to use it for my son when he was a baby, but not when he was that young. It would help slow down the diarrea. Also, you should sterilize the bottles and nipples in hot water if you are just using the dishwasher, or start hand washing and sterilizing the bottles. That way you know that it is free of bacteria, and there is no chemical residue on the bottles from dishwashing detergent.

I was surprised to learn that you were giving her cereal already. Most babies do not take solid food until they are 6 months old. Have you ever thought that the cereal may be the culprit? The formula provides all the nutrients the baby needs, I would try eliminating the cereal to see if that helps.

Hi S.: My daughter had bad diarrehea as a baby and I bought a formula made especially for diarrehea. I don't remeber the name but it was a Similac product. Also maybe you can give watered down pedilight?

S.,

Is it possible that she is having trouble with the rice cereal? She is too young to be on rice cereal as the range is normally 4 to 6 months with most telling you to wait until they are 6 months. Babies' digestive systems need to mature and it could be hurting her to get the cereal so young. You are also taking the chance of introducing eczema and allergies because of starting it too early.

Please talk to your pediatrician.

Pretty much agree with everyone else....did your pediatrician tell you to start solids that early? I would look at the solids as the most likely culprit. Definitely get her tested for allergies and celiac - but also, realize your baby may be one of those babies that just can't tolerate formula, much like some people can't wear clothes made of synthetic fibers while most people can wear them just fine. I breastfeed my son (7 mos), so obviously I'm a big fan of that, but if it's not practical or possible for you to relactate and you really can't find a formula your baby tolerates, consider either a milk bank or Milkshare. For a milk bank, you'll need a prescription from your pediatrician, and you will pay a handling fee, but you have the assurance that the milk has been tested and pasteurized by the Bank. This is what's most often given to sick preemies with NEC. With a milk share, you would receive donor milk directly from the donor - it's less expensive (just pay for donor's shipping costs) but you'd want to get all the tests that would be done for a milk bank donor (full blood panel) done yourself, and write up a contract between yourself and the donor.

It may sound like an extreme length to go, but when you have a sick baby you need to consider everything, especially with persistent diarrhea, which is dangerous.

Good luck - I sure hope your sweet baby feels better!!

Have you had her tested for celiac sprue? It is an intolerance to gluten (wheat, rye, oats and barley ... and many times it is in some processed soy products)? Try giving her rice cereal ... you can look at www.celiacsprue.com. I have celiac (none of my daughters do) and intestinal distress is the biggest indicator.

Hi S., can you breast feed her? She is definitely having an allergic reaction. The Weston A Price foundation has a formula that you can make at home for your baby that might be helpful. Sometimes it is an ingredient in the mass produced formula that causes a problem.

Hi there... I also had a baby with colic who ended up on soy formula, so I feel your frustration. Hang in there, trust me, it does get better!
Now for the diarrhea, I give me little one powdered probiotics from the health food store. Ask them to help you, there are ones that are made for infants. It may help, and it won't hurt.
Good luck, and also I found that "Hyland's colic tablets" at the health food store also helped. I was quite sceptical at first, but for us, they did help.
Good luck.

Hi S.,

I am not really experienced with formulas, but I also agree that at 3 months, your baby does not need cereal or solids, and if the baby might have allergies or some other issue that might cause lack of weight gain, you don't want to fill the baby up with cereal which is giving no nutrients. I'm not sure what you mean by the soy must not have been working. I would suggest talking to the doctor about testing for allergies or gastroenterological issues. And S., you cannot spoil a young infant so please listen to your baby, if she is crying, she needs something, even if it is just human contact. Babies who are held a lot gain weight more quickly and have higher IQ's - it is not just a want for them, it is a need. Our babies are less mature than other mammals, whose babies get up and walk away from their mother after an hour - it takes our babies a year to do that!

Good luck with your baby, I hope the digestive issues improve soon!

Hi there. I don't have much experience with formula and stuff, but I did want to ask, why did you start her on cereal already? 3 months is way too young to start solids. When did you start the cereal and do you see a connection to the diarreah? I know that the recommendation for solids is not before 6 months. Giving solids earlier can open a whole slew of problems with digestion and allergies. I'd look more into that.

Hope she gets better soon.

Did your daughter get the roto virus vaccination? Both my sister's son and my daughter got very sick from the roto virus vaccination at their 2 month visit. My sister's son has had diarrehea for weeks now. My daughter only had it for a couple of days. My ped said he has had many babies get sick from the vaccination and said he has become very apprehensive about giving it. My daughter also had very bad colic and was diagnosed with a milk protein allergy. Alimentum is the only formula that she could stomach, besides breastmilk with me not having any dairy. I am curious if it was the alimentum that made her sick or her 2 month shots. I hope she feels better. Colic is the worts thing in the world for a mother. good luck
