My son is almost 3 months old and is on formula and only eats around 20 oz per day...nurse at doctors office said he s/b eating 30-32 oz per day. He sleeps from 9pm to about 4-5am, he is happy and alert and has lots of wet diapers. Should I be concerned that he eats so little?

What can I do next?

No, don't worry. Their appetites can vary day to day just like ours can. My daughter is 6 1/2 months old. She normally takes around 6 oz of expressed breast milk at lunchtime; today she only took around 3 1/2 oz.

If he's happy, alert, and has lots of wet diapers, he's doing just fine.

It can also depend on his size; a 12 lb baby isn't going to eat as much as a 17 lb baby, even if they are both 3 months old. The lactation consultant I saw said the amount they take can vary by their weight. Take the # of lbs your son weighs, multiply it by 2.5, and divide that total by the # of feedings he takes in a day.

Also, if he is growing and gaining weight appropriately & meeting his developmental milestones appropriately, he is probably getting enough intake.
If not, then check with your Pediatrician.

as long as hes growing, is happy he should be fine. i have a 13mo that will drink anywhere from 4oz to 14oz at one time. also if he is having lots of wet diapers then thats a good sign. dont worry about what the drs says unless his eating dramatically stops or decreases more. good luck!

It shouldonly be a concern if your son isnt gaining weight or if he starts to loose weight. Both of my children ages 15 and 2 never ate the recommened amount, they were both thin but not unhealthy and they are fine now...they eat healthy and are active
