3 Month Old Kicks Legs and Squirms Around While Sleeping

My 3 month old just started to wake up every hour or so. Prior to this, he slept pretty well through the night, only waking to nurse a few times. He kicks his legs a lot and squirms around until he finally wakes himself up. I try to nurse him, but he refuses. I thought it might be a growth spurt, but apparently not because he isn't any hungrier than usual. Anyone have this problem, or have any suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all of your advice and suggestions. I did try to swaddle him, but the blankets I have aren't big enough. (He is 16 pounds) Perhaps I will try a sleep sack if he continues to squirm. He has actually been a little better the last few nights. I don't know...maybe it could be teething because during the day, he drools and chews on his fingers all the time. But it is pretty early! I was also thinking that maybe it is gas and abdominal discomfort. His zantac dosage was just increased, so maybe that is irritating his stomach? I do have an 8 year old son, but it has been so long, I feel like a first time mom!

Hi Angela-

It sounds like your baby would benefit from swaddling. A lot of babies sleep much better when they are swaddled. (I know mine sure did.... it made such a difference!) You said you tried to nurse and he's not hungry .... so it is probably just a fact that he wants to get back to sleep and can't. The swaddling will keep him from kicking all around. Therefore, he won't be kicking and squirming, so he won't wake himself up. Now a days, there are swaddling blankets at stores. 9 years ago, we just used a large receiving blanket and wrapped my twins up like little burritos! (Sometimes the blankets would get undone in the middle of night and the crying would start again until we'd go wrap them up again.) Look online or ask your doctor how to swaddle if you're unsure. Or go buy a swaddling blanket made for this and I'm sure the price is reasonable. I'm pretty sure the constant waking should diminish with the swaddling.

Enjoy your little one.

We used Velcro-style swaddlers (Kiddopotamus) and Halo Sleep Sacks (a little less restricting than being swaddled) for just about the first year. My son would move around and wake himself up... He hated being swaddled at first, but he eventually grew to love it and it sure did keep him asleep. We would probably still be using the sleep sacks if they didn't use that gross fire-retardant material for the toddler-sized sleep sacks. I loved the cotton knit fabric of the baby Sleep Sacks.

Good luck! You'll find what works for you.

Try to swaddle him. See if that helps. I would also give him some infant tylenol. He could also be starting to have some teething issues. Good luck

I know that in the hospital that this is the reason that they swaddle the babies.

My son hated swaddling and even the NICU nurses couldn't keep him swaddled, so we went to sleep sacks until he started having anything on his legs/feet (its always something, haha). It might sound early, but at 3mos my son was alllllll over the place in his crib, sometimes rolling over from being a spazz (not from actually having the skill down pat), and then calming down once on his belly. (I'm not saying to go against the advice of doctors and/or the 'back to sleep' program.) Like others said, it could also be teething - my son started teething around 4mos. Supposedly, that comes from the mother (I started at 3mos), so if you were an early teether, he may be too. It could be a light shining towards him, we have to cover every possible light source.

Good luck!

I really think swaddling will help too. It helped all of my babies. If thery were not swaddled and they squirmed, they would wake themselves up.
