Hi Moms,

Is it normal for a 3 mnth old to still be spitting up so much?
Sometimes he spits up so much I feel as if it was everything he probably just ate!
Other times, he may not spit up as much right after a feeding BUT will start spitting
up about every 10 minutes.
I am exclusively breastfeeding and burp him sitting upright for at least 20-30 minutes after a feeding.
Could this be acid reflux? Sometimes hes fussy with the spitting up, and other times hes not....will he grow out of it?
He is gaining weight normally as well.
Thanks in advance for any info.

What can I do next?

My poor child spit up until about 6 months!!! He spit up so much we usually double bibbed him just in case. I believe my son had acid reflux. He was constantly uncomfortable and all the spitting up and crying were big hints. We finally ended up getting him some medicine after filming him trying to eat. It was horrible. We found that Dr. Brown's bottles helped tremendously if/when you begin bottles.

But I think at 3 months, its probably very normal.

I've exclusively breastfed my baby now for 8 months and she's just now easing up on the spitting up. It's completely normal! As long as he's gaining weight, which you said he is, he's fine!

If he is gaining weight normally, you really do not have to worry that much.

My 2nd spit up too. From day one he did. I got scared once when he was about a month old and he threw it ALL up. I took him to the pedi. I was given the following advice:

-Never wait TOO long between feedings during the day (even if he is napping).

-After eating, do not allow him to lay down FLAT. Prop him up in a swing, bouncer, etc. to allow gravity to help hold down the food. (He still spit up, but not as bad.)

-When you start solids, don't give "sharp" or spicy foods on an empty stomach.

I hope it helps.

Blessings,
P. <><

Very normal for a spitter. If he's not arching his back and screaming when eating and/or burping, he probably doesn't have acid reflux - he's just a spitter. My kids are/were both spitters. My oldest spit up for about her first year, and my youngest is still going strong at 6 months (it seems to be worse right now, believe it or not, because she's teething and has so much more drool). As long as they're gaining weight, they're fine. Also, I would never quit breastfeeding because your child spits up - that won't solve the problem!

HI-As long as he is gaining weight appropriately and is not extremely fussy, then it is basically a laundry issue! We usually treat kids with reflux if they are not gaining weight and/or are very fussy. He should outgrow it although it will get worse for a while when he is crawling due to increased pressure on the abdomen.By the time he is walking it should be gone.Usually it looks like they have spit up a lot more than they have.Only get concerned if it is projectile(like the exorcist) or yellow or green.Keeping him elevated after feedings will help, too. Also, when he turns 4 months and can have cereal it will thicken everything and help to keep it down more!

My daughter spit up for 3 months and my son for 9. Reflux is more common in boys from my research. I ended up pumping and giving them 4 oz feedings more often. My daughter was on 4 oz feedings until 6 months old. It was better than having to give her the harsh meds. I also used milocon (sp?) drops if it was really bad and they have store brand now that is less expensive. We carried many burp cloths and extra clothes for them as well as an extra top for me in case of a massive explosion! Good luck and just try to be patient. It's frustrating I know.

Totally normal! My firlst never ever spit up, but then my second and third were "spitters". I know there were definitely times that I felt that they had spit up their entire meal, but the Pedi told me that we only needed to be concerned if they started loosing weight... which they never did. I, too, exclusively breastfed. She said it was reflux, but we definitely didn't need to treat with medication because he wasn't crying in pain, which means that he wasn't burning when it came back up. My second child is now 2, and spit up occasionally till about 18 months old. My youngest is 6 months, and he now spits up after every feeding, but not a large amount anymore. NO worries!

Hi N.,

My 9 week old twin boys are real geysers sometimes. I've found that if I burp them very frequently - like every 5 minutes/1 ounce - it really minimizes the spitting up. It's a whip and really stretches out the feedings, but it's worth it to not have to deal with all that yuckiness! :)

Hello N.,

Great advice so far. However, have you noticed if what you eat has any effect on him? ~C.~

As many others said, I think this sounds normal for your son. My daugher was a spit-up baby until about 6-7 months. And she would spit up a lot, we just left bibs on her all the time, otherwise we would've constantly been changing her outfits. I breastfed her for the first 4-months, then she was on formula later, the spit up was the same. Unless he's fussy all the time, screaming and seeming in pain (like others mentioned), it's probably not acid reflux. Ask your pediatrician at the next checkup ~ I asked mine at every checkup. :) Always got the same response from her ~ daughter was just a spit up baby and eventually she would grow out of it and she did! Good luck!

Hey, I have a 4 month old that still spits up also. (but he has acid-reflex). I think you would know if your child did have it. My son cried and screamed almost everytime he spat up or burped. I would say as long as he is gaining weight and having the normal amount of diapers then he should be doing ok. Sometimes it seems like they spit up more than they really do. Good luck!
