3 Kids Is the New "Trend"

What is the deal with people competing with each other for how many children they have. Latley it seems that mothers are wanting to have 3 children as if it is a status symbol. People I know talk about it like if you hace 3 kids, it's the trend now a days. I don't get it. Has anyone else run into this? I think it is crazy. To have a certain # of children because 3 looks better to the outside world. Am I the only person who thinks this is crazy, or even has heard about this "trend"?
Another questinn. For all the parnets who only have 1 child, and do not want more, do you feel a backlash from others? Do people treat and or look at you diferently?

What can I do next?

Hi C.

I have one daughter and will be perfectly happy if she is my only one. We had to do fertility treatments for her, and i dont know if i want to go through that again. Also, shes so easy to deal with and adding another child scares me. I am constantly being asked when we will have the next one. I used to say"I think we are happy as a threesome"...i would always get the most shocking faces!! Like i suddenly grew a third eye on my forehead! I do think its a personal decision and dont understand why anyone would have kids to keep up with another family! Thats just ridiculous! My daughter has many friends from her classes and we are expecting her 3rd cousin in March. I dont feel the need to have siblings. But i am also someone who was raised as an only child. The decision to have children should be between you and your husband...and noone else!!
We should start a new trend...One Child and Proud:)LOL

Well, quite a few years back it was considered bad to have 3 kids because then you have a "middle kid" with "middle kid syndrome."

I don't know that people REALLY decide to have 3 kids just because it's a trend. Having a child is a big decision, and usually it's based on finances and space and personal preference.

What I have found is the opposite. People who are unsatisfied with their lives tend to talk big like what they did is the "right" thing (they have 3 kids so obviously 3 is the right number). Or they have 2 boys, and boys are so much better than girls, etc.

The economy isn't that great, morale isn't that great and many people don't have jobs. I'm seeing a lot more people complain (even myself) and do what they can to make themselves feel better. Hopefully we can keep our chins up and HELP one another through this tough time.

i think its isolated, just depends where your circle of friends are but I think you're looking into it way too much. I would not be touched by it or spend any time thinking about it. Enjoy your kids and feel blessed to have whatever you have. Its not the number, its the quality you have with them!

I agree with Naomi. I think it depends on your circle of friends. I have never cared at all what anybody thought or said about my personal life, and I don't care what everybody else does. I had an only child for 10 years before my second came along and I never had anyone say anything to me about it. And if they did, I would certainly ask them why they felt it was their business.

I looked at funny when I am out with my brood of 5 like we are crazy or worse.. I think the number of children a couple has is entirely up to them and let all those nosey butt in types to bug off. Have a good day!
