Can someone enlighten me on this? How does it work? My 4 month old has never slept for more than five hours straight at one time....and that was like twice. Need advice! I have two other very active little boys to tend to and I need to sleep at some point! For the most part he is up every hour or two through the night and takes a couple of 1- 3 hour ( on a good day) nap a day. Other than that I'm busy feeding, changing, holding singing swaying him to keep him happy! He spits up a ton and is on Zantac for acid reflux....waaaaaahhhhhh....I do know 4 months is young to sleep through the night and I'm not asking for that just longer stretches for a happier baby and a happier me.

What can I do next?

You can get a book from the library. I will add the name in a min.
I wasn't a fan.
Wow, your 4 months old sleeps for 5 hours at a time? I'm jealous. :)
Mine woke up every 3 hours for months and months and months.
It was okay. I can't even remember it now and he's only 3.
Sometimes I would get a 5 hr stretch when he got to be a little older.
I just dealt w/it & the time passed quickly.
The upside? I got to do things around the house when he was asleep (check the computer, make dinner during one of his naps, rest).
Someone told me to sleep when he sleeps, I finally took that advice.
As an infant, I would sleep when he did.
As he got older, I would take one of his 2 hrs naps to do things & rest
during the other nap.
Now that he's 3 and no longer naps, I'm always "on". :)
It gets easier and more fun!
My advice is sleep/rest when he sleeps.
Best advice I ever got and did not take right away.
Best wishes! :)

Hi P.!

Have you tried using a baby swing? You can get one on craigslist if you don't have one or want to buy one. That worked wonders for me. He'll also be on a little incline, which may help. I've read that putting him in a seat of some kind (bouncy or car) either by itself or on top of a running dryer (away from the edge of course) can also help soothe a child to sleep.

Another option would be to wear him during the day either in a sling or carrier. I know this won't help you to sleep, but it may keep him sleeping longer. Some babies just don't like or feel comfy in a crib until later, if he is sleeping in a crib, so helping them feel secure and warm might help?

I know he is older for this, but swaddling or a sleep sac might help

My 5.5 mo old has pretty bad reflux too. Have you thought about tilting up one end of his crib? Or having him sleep on a wedge? My daughter hated the wedge, but we have her crib tilted at about a 30-45 degree angle, and that seems to help a bit. We also let her sleep on her side. She eventually rolls to her back, but she starts out on her side. Put him down on his left side (not his right; the right side will allow more acid up his throat whereas the left helps to keep the acid in the stomach) and see if that helps. If you feel like the Zantac isn't helping much, you might ask your pediatrician about a trial run of Prevacid. Prevacid helps to reduce the amount of acid that your stomach produces whereas Zantac helps to neutralize the acid that your stomach does produce. You might think about that.
