My daughter naval is an outie, so at the suggestion of her pedi we are going to see a pediatric surgeon on Monday. Has anyone child had this procedure done and if so, what was the recovery time and what information can tell me about this procedure. I know I will find out all this information Monday but was curious beforehand.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We went to see the surgeon today. It definitely is an umbilical hernia and its starting to develop very thick skin, so the doctor is suggesting surgery becuase he said DD falls into the category of it not correcting itself. Doctor indicated that she should be back on her feet in 2-3 days following the surgery but try to limit most of her activites during the time. Hopefully everything will go well and that will not have any reoccuring problems. Thanks everyone for responding to my email!

I can't really answer your questions but thought I'd tell you that I'm 34, had the hernia repair surgery at age 2, and haven't ever had any complications from it. I wouldn't have even known I had the surgery if my parents hadn't told me about it.

Is it really an umbilical hernia or just an outie? Umbilical hernias are quite common and very easy to fix. Usually they are done at same day surgery. The pedi surgeon should be able to answer any questions. Just make sure that they are a board certified pediatric surgeon and use a pediatric anesthesiologist. I'm a pedi RN and if it were my child that's what I would want mainly because children are so different from adults. The recovery time from surgery shouldn't be too long. Kids bounce back so quickly that she'll probably be playing the next day. I would also encourage you to ask about any pain meds that they plan on giving her. Make sure she gets something. Unfortunately there are still some doctors out there that don't believe in giving kids pain meds. PM if you have any more questions. I would also suggest writing down questions and bringing them with you to the appointment and then writing down the answers. Its hard to remember all of the info sometimes:-} Good luck!

My daughter had the surgery but she was only about 11 months old at the time. She did wonderfully! By the next day she acted like she was perfectly normal. It was almost impossible to keep her still. She had no complications at all. Good luck and God bless!

My daughter now 4 had a regular looking belly button at birth and up until she was almost a year old. Then she developed an umbilical hernia too. Our Pediatrician told us to let it go because the surgery would be more stressful than the hernia.

Almost 30 years ago, I had one repaired. I think I spent one night in the hospital. But my parents love to tell people that the day I came home from the hospital, I was dancing. There was basically no reovery time for me. It may partly depend on yor daughter, but if I recovered that quickly 30 years ago, I'm sure that recovery time is still pretty short. Good Luck!
