So our sweet little Sydney is having her tonsils/adnoids out and tubes put in her ears. The nurse I spoke to said that it will take 30-45 mins. I am looking forward to having a healthy little girl again. But I am having a queesy (sp) stomach from my nerves just shaking. Please for those that had this done for their LO's let me know how it went. How long before they were up and around back to school and such.

and before I get the shes too young for this, a little back history..Syd has been on an antibiotic every month this year sometimes twice, for ear/throat infections and had c-diff for her 2nd bday in July.

TIA for any stories

So What Happened?

No not at Rileys, she is having it done at the ENT center connected to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.

Syd did ok. She had a hell of a time with the pain while waking. She refused to drink, but the doc said we could take her an if she does not drink and pee by 1pm they would admitt her. Well we got home she ate a fruit snack pac and 4 mni muffins and drank almost 9oz in an hour. So I knew she would be fine. She kept askng to go while in recovery. There is nothing like being at home. Thanks for all of the stories, Im glad this will be a once in a lifetime thing with the tonsiles/adnoids.

My great-nephew had it the other day (he's 4-1/2) and it was a breeze for them. My own daughter has had numerous surgeries for other problem(s), so I understand the feeling. I'll be praying for you! God bless...

My daughter (now 2.5) has had 2 surgeries. both for ear tubes. My sister in law (so my nephew) had his tonsils and adnoids out. I can tell you the recovery time for the tonsil and adnoids is slow (was for my nephew) he was not sleeping through the night for almost a month..during the day while he was medicated and getting popsciles he was fine my SIL said the night time stuff really sucked (and she is a SAHM)
My LO with the tube surgerys was back up and running the next day...Dont worry about the surgery. those people know what they are doing. Focus more on the aftercare.

we sent PM's to eachother I think. Our Ian is having his tonsils out on Friday and they are going to try to get a tube in his right ear. (his right ear is much smaller than his left and they havent been able to get one in before so we are really hoping it will work this time, he has such a bad hearing loss in his right ear). I know with the tubes it's no big deal. I am getting nervous about his tonsils though. although, we are no strangers to surgeries though. all 3 of our boys were born with bilateral cleft lip and palate. Ian had his lip repair @ 3 months old, a tube in his left ear @ 6 months old, palate repaired @ 1 year old along with a birth mark on the back of his head removed, another tube in his left ear @ 2 years old and now the tonsillectomy and right ear tube @ 2 and a half years old. The twins had their lips repaired @ 4 months old (supposed to have them done at 3 months old but they had been hospitalized for RSV and had to be at least 6 weeks recovered from the RSV before they could have their surgeries) then in early december right after their 1st birthday they will have their palates repaired.

The biggest thing is just be prepared for anything. Give lots of hugs, be brave for them before they take them back and wait until they are out of your sight to cry or have a breakdown (been there done that). And just in case she does end up having to stay overnight take lots of her favorite toys/books etc and her potty chair. Good Luck!!!! let me know how it goes!!

ETA: oh my gosh I just saw you are in Indiana, is she having it done at Riley Childrens Hospital?? I used to work there!

my baby (4 years old) broke his arm a couple months ago....i freaked. not in front of him of course...but when we went to get a cast the next morning (after spending all night in the ER), it was still too swollen to put it on, so we had to wait two days with it in a splint, and then they knocked him out to rebreak it and put a cast on it. uuuuugh i hated it! i'm getting all emotional thinking of it now. they are just SOO LITTLE and it's just not right that they should have to go through that.

what got me through is knowing it was harder on me than him...and that he will probably not remember much (if any) of the whole thing. keep it together mom, and it'll be fine i'm sure. it is TORTURE...i know!

It is totally normal to be nervous and anxious, but boy it will change all of your lives. She will do great.

She will look pitiful when you first see her after the procedure, but she will recognize you and want mommy and it will all be fine.

She will do BEAUTIFULLY. Don't worry, mama...she'll be on pain medication when she's done...and this surgery will be the start of a much happier healthier life for everyone in your family.

Be sure to bring along a special lovey from home for her to have and smell after surgery. The hospital smells funny and just having something from home that smells like mama's laundry is a huge help.

My son had his adenoids removed and his second set of tubes put in when he was uh... 4 I think. He did great. He also did great with the 1st set of tubes. He was a bit groggy afterwards, but we went home after only a few hours. I think it only took about 30 minutes. I remember being surprised they came back so soon! I think the longest part for him was coming off the anesthesia. He was totally fine by the next day.

When he was probably 3, maybe had just turned 4 he had a cyst removed that was on his thyroid. Here he comes back with an incision line across his throat. It sounds so freaky! I was a little freaked out by it (nervous mommy) but he was FINE! I had to keep reminding him to calm down and that he shouldn't be bouncing around. He was home the next day.

So, I guess I'm saying kids bounce back and you'll both do great!!! Best of luck with the surgery!!!

Our oldest had tubes put in her ears at 15 months after having 13 ear infections in 12 months (the ins co required 9 in 12 months but by the time the ent could schedule her she went over the req'd amt) and that was a godsend. She didn't have her tonsils/adnoids taken out until the 3rd grade, again the ins co mumbo jumbo, but once she did it was smooth sailing.

As mentioned in some of the other posts, she will look a little dazed, but as the days go by she will be one step closer to a much happier life. Just keep in mind that this isn't a miracle cure, that strep will still occur, as will other illnesses. I think the hardest part of this is the vomitting, I was 19 when I had mine taken out and I still remember how frightened I was when I got sick from all of the junk that ended up in my stomach from during surgery. She may fight you with the taste of the medicine but it is really important to give it to her because that will numb her throat so she will drink and swallow the allowed foods (jello's & such), you don't want her to dehydrate, my daughter went that route, had to spend a few days in the hosptial because of her stubborness (no fun), just take a deep breathe and know that in a few hours the worst will be over. Best of luck to all of you.

I hope everything turned out okay for you. Our little guy had surgery yesterday morning to get some teeth filled. When he has tubes put in last year he came out of the anesthesia screaming like a banshee!!!! But yesterday he woke up slowly, they don't use just gas, they use full anesthesia.

I was very pleased with the waking up this time.

We suggested the burrito him before leaving the operating room but they didn't, so when he woke up coming down the hall he tore his IV's out and then went back to sleep. He woke up slowly otherwise and the drugs are totally out of his system this morning.
