Hi Ladies,

Hope you have some insight... This is my 3rd pregnancy but I have never experienced these spells of heart palpitations and shortness of breath. They seem to come on randomly and not necessarily during anything I would consider strenuous. Of course I consulted my OB and have an appointment tomorrow, just wondering if anyone else has gone through this and what could possibly be the cause??? Any insight??? Thanks

What can I do next?

I know when PG we are supposed to limit caffeine intake but unfortunately some women don't. Limit pop or coffee, this can cause heart palpitations as well.

glad you are going to your doc tomorrow.

This happens to me (not PG) when I'm really tired. It also happens when I'm more hormonal. It can also be a symptom of anemia / low iron - are you eating enough foods high in iron like red meat, spinach, etc? And this baby may jsut be stiing on a certain nerve in your body. I used to get really dizzy with my first pregnancy, had extreme carpal tunnel problems in the fist trimester - none of that occured with my second pregnancy.

It's good you're getting checked out, but I think the shortness of breath is easily explained. The baby's position takes up a ton of space in the chest cavity sometimes, so the lungs can't expand that well. I had chest pain actually from the rib cage separating from the pressure. Not the same result as what you are having, but it could easily be the same cause. If you are chasing kids around, you're obviously going to be more tired from that too.

Heart palpitations could be stress, could be lack of oxygen, could be due to some nerve pressure, or other things. Don't panic.

Both could be due more to the baby's position than what you are actually doing at the time.

I had that especially in my second trimester. Nothing was wrong with me - it was pure anxiety. Stress from my commute to work, work stress and OMG having a baby stress. Try some relaxation techniques. They help a lot.

Have your thyroid levels checked.
It's possible your thyroid is working overtime and making you a bit hyperthyroid.

Hi,

I experienced this in my pregnancy and also now.

I had low hemoglobin during my pregnancies (I still do) and you can get shortness of breath and palpitations with that - it's usually from low iron. A lot of pregnant women get anemic during their pregnancies. I'm sure they'll order some blood tests for you when you go. Nothing major, but it can produce those symptoms.

I had babies that were in the 90th percentile and I often felt uncomfortable and short of breath with them. I was told that your organs shift and sometimes push up towards your chest to make room for your growing uterus. I had a really hard time once during the last month.

I would guess you're fine but good you are going in, and they can check you over so you don't have to worry :)

good luck and congratulations!

when you go to the doctors, have them check your iron level.... both symptoms can possibly be the result of anemia... which is not uncommon, especially in pregnant women.. which although you didn't suffer from such symptoms with the previous two, doesn't mean it can't happen now..
it's worth looking into...

These types of thing are not good but are common in pregnancy. I work in a chiropractic office that specializes in prenatal and pediatric care. As your young one grows, your body makes adjustments for his living area...this includes moving of bones. Most OBs recommend chiropractic care if you're pregnant. Besides helping with medical issues (because this is a neurological science) it will also help your labor and delivery.

God bless!

P.S. Go to icpa4kids.org. Interview the doctor and if they don't understand the immune system or the communication to major organs, keep shopping!

I often wonder about questions like this. Not that they are trolls or anything like that but because a person is going to an OB/GYN for possibly a heart issue instead of their regular doctor.

Since I'm curious can you tell me why you'd rather go to your OB/GYN instead of your regular doc for something probably not about the baby?

Just really don't understand and hoping you'll indulge me.

How did your appointment go today? During my second pregnancy, shortness of breath and racing heart were common (shortness of breath was what inspired me to take a pregnancy test to begin with). See what your doc says, but I'd second the recommendation for iron supplement. Best wishes for a healthy third pregnancy!

Your iron is probably low.
