2Nd Story Game Room with Large Window Opening to the down Stairs

I have a half wall in my game room that opens up to the lower level. It is an actual wall, rather than an opening with spindles and a railing. My almost 2 year old is a big time climber, and this opening scares me. It occurs to me as she gets older, it may be tempting to lean over the edge to call downstairs to mom, or for teenagers to consider it additional seating. I don't feel safe at all with this opening. My baby proofer suggested having a carpenter install railing spindles, that to wall it up or put in a window/plexiglass would effect our heating & cooling. A few years ago he suggested a long baby gate as a temporary fix, but now feels that is not secure enough. I am not sure what to do. Right now I have a baby gate across the entrance to the room so she cannot get in without me, but she climbed over a baby gate the other day so that does not make me feel as secure. Does anyone else have this situation? What advice do you have to offer?
Thanks,
A.

We half wall on one side of the stairway, and the railing/ loft that faces out over the living room. We are planning to have both the half wall& the railing taken out & have full walls put in. A neighbor with the same floor plan did it a year or so ago, and she only spend about $1500 on it.

Try this Guy: Electrician & Carpenter: Guy Mallow ###-###-####. He did some similar work at a friends & they were very pleased. He's a retired contractor & can do just about anything for you!

I had the same wall 8 years ago when we moved here and before I got unpacked I called a contractor to come in and finish it to make it a FULL wall. I wouldn't bother with railings.... they can break. And the noise reduction from having a full wall in the game room was a blessing.

It cost about $1,000. I know a great contractor if you're interested.

I know it might be expensive, but I would have to agree with the babyproofer. Get the railings put in. We just moved and looked at a couple of houses that had that wall. We didn't end up buying one like that, but now that you mention your dilema, I'm glad we didn't since it didn't even occur to me that my little one might try to climb the wall. I think putting any kind of furniture in front of it will only make it easier for a kid to climb on the furniture and get up on top of the wall, so I wouldn't put anything along there if you can help it. It's so hard for us to think of everything isn't it! Good luck.

A. g,
this is very common in home's and can be a hazard, especially with little ones. We have in-closed pony walls completely and some pony walls we have installed glass or plexiglas keeping it as a window. The importance is making it a safe environment for all. You can look us up under home maintenance then other maintenance.
Good luck,

I have the same exact thing in my house! My two year old tried it a couple of times! I bought those toy shelves that you store toy bins on and put them in front of the 1/2 wall. She can't climb them or go around them. It's worked well so far! We are moving though and thats one of the reasons for the move!~ I have that 1/2 wall!
