Well my boyfriend is turning 25 in a few weeks and I would like to make him a GREAT cake for it. not just a two layer box cake with box frosting. I want something different AND good. he likes lemon (I don't though) he does like chocolate cakes I just want something very good and want to make it home made. I will have the weekend before to do it because I am off all weekend and his birthday. any one have any good suggestions and a recipe to go along with it. I am fine with it being a rich chocolate cake with some sort of other filling oh he does like cheese cakes I do if there are other things with them. I just want to do something really special since it is his 25th and its a bigger birthday in my book

That's very sweet of you.

I was a professional baker and cake decorator before I came into the military. I still enjoy making cakes on occasion. What I will say probably won't be the norm, but whatever.

Make a cake from a recipe that's based upon a boxed cake. Like this one: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Too-Much-Chocolate-Cake/Deta...

Why? Well, it's pretty simple. The companies that focus on cake mixes, like Duncan Heinz and Pillsbury, have perfected the art of consistency. Their products are made so as to consistently turn out great cakes, even for those who aren't professional bakers. The average home baker doesn't know which ratios of cake flour to use, don't have finely granulated sugars, and don't know the difference between Dutched and regular cocoas. But those companies do and they use those items.

Best of luck to you in your cake baking endeavor!

My favorite is a flourless chocolate cake with chocolate ganache (instead of frosting). Serve it with fresh homemade whipped cream and raspberries. Oh my god...so good! Just google for recipes!

I agree with Christy Lee. You can take a boxed cake mix and add to them to make them custom. That's how I make my cupcakes. If you do a search for recipes using boxed cake mix you will see a lot of options. You could make your own homemade frosting really easy. I recommend a recipe for what's called "bakery frosting" because it's a sturdy frosting that won't wilt or melt on you.

If you're not a big baker, I wouldn't try a homemade cheesecake first rattle out of the box.

Hope he has a great birthday and you both have fun!

I agree to go onto allrecipes.com. It's a great site! Just search for the type of cake you want and a lot will come up. The ones on the first page have the best reviews. I would absolutely read the reviews (at least about 10 or so) before you bake though to see what others have said. You can really learn a lot from those comments. I have also used boxed mixes before and added things to them to make them better and that is a great idea! Sometimes the actual box mix companies (Pilsbury, Duncan Hines) will have ideas on their websites too.

I make a lot of cheesecakes and they are really not that hard, just a bit time consuming. If you Philadelphia Cream Cheese website probably has a lot of them listed if you go that route, but look early because some you have to refrigerate for a day or a number of hours before completing or serving.
