2.5 Year Old Sleep Problems

Our daughter has always slept pretty well and has never been afraid of anything. She'll stand in a dark room or our horse barn and be perfectly content...but...
this past sunday morning she woke up at 230-wide awake and just talking. I tried for about 20 min. to get her to go back to sleep but she didnt want to so I just laid down in our guest bed with her, thinking she'd fall asleep with me. About 30 min. after we laid down she started saying it's getting me, it's on you and whining/crying, grabbing at her arm or back or neck, etc. I thought maybe she was starting to be scared of the dark and turned the light on. She kept doing it and looking around like something was going to get her. This continued thru the night and most of the day on Sunday. It was worse when trying to lay down or in her car seat. She fell asleep in the car sunday night and I was able to lay her down & she slept till 630 Monday morning. She was fine all day Monday but then last night when I laid her down she started back up-kept sayin "skitos" (I'm assuming mosquitoes) were getting her and saying ow. It got to the point of her almost being hysterical & drenched in sweat. Finally fell alseep on dady in his chair. But woke again at 130 with same issues-just not as bad. She has not been sick, no fever, no scary movies, etc.
Any suggestions?

So What Happened?

***Thank you!!! I have started using some "magic" lotion and we put her in a toddler bed with new tinkerbell sheets (she loves tinkerbell) and that wen over very well last night. The pediatrician called back last night for an update and he said it sounds like she is mainly doing it to get her way and not have to go to sleep or be in the carseat, etc. But to keep eye on her and be very friendly and reassuring about it all. She woke up twice early this AM but just called for us-no crying or screaming or "skitos" and I just sat by her bed till she fell asleep again-so much more like my little girl again!!! Please feel free to continue commenting-it's nice to know that I'm not the only one who problems that I can seem to figure out. :)

I've checked her whole body and not found anything. My mom suggested the change sheets thing too. I dont think we have ever talked about mosquitoes. And this year so far she hasnt been outside when they are out. Thank you for the replies-please keep them coming.

I would try a different detergent, in case she is getting itchy from the what the sheets are washed in, and double rinse them. I would also try a different soap & shampoo to bathe her in. Try some non-allergenic products.

Somehow mosquitos have really scared her. Have you asked her if she is scared of mosquitoes and why? I bet someone has said something about them that has her freaking out. My oldest son is awful when it comes to certain things especially if he hears something scarey about them. First I would show her that there are no mosquitoes around and if she continued to be scared I would put some Skin So Soft lotion on her and tell her that the lotion keeps the mosquitoes away. I know it might sound ridiculous but the lotion is not going to hurt her and it claims to keep mosquitoes away. That might comfort her. At that age they need some type of security still and this may be it. Just a suggestion.

Well does she have anything on the back of her neck? Maybe there was something in her bed that bit her. I would just change her sheets and assure her there is nothing there. You could give her something like a toy that you can tell her will keep the skitos away.

Did someone recently get bit by a mosquito or did that topic of conversation just come up? Was there an incident where she was introduced to mosquitos? Maybe get a spray bottle with water and mist it around and tell her all the "skitos" are gone now... best wishes

It sounds like night terrors. My daughter went through this for a while. It is strange at first because it seemed like she was awake but she was actually sleeping. It progressed to walking in her sleep though never to a point that it was dangerous. The only "awful" if you can call it that was when she almost use a trash can as toilet. Usually I could soothe her and direct her back to her bed to sleep. Sometimes it did take a while for her to sleep again. I think it lasted maybe 9 months though could have been less or more, can't remember. I am wondering if I will go through this with my little one who is 2. She has been waking at 3 or 3:30 but don't know if it is teething or the terrors occasionally.
