21 Month Old Sleeping a Lot

For the past several days, my son has been unusually tired, and I'm feeling a bit worried.

Right now, he is going to bed around 8pm and sleeping til 8 or 9am (he does wake up 3 or 4 times crying, but falls back to sleep after a few minutes of being held -- this is fairly normal for him).

He then wants to nap again around 10 or 11am (for about 2 hours).

He gets up and plays and seems really happy, but is ready for yet another one-hour nap by 4pm.

Then he's up and plays, but is totally ready for bed again around 8pm.

So, for about a week, he's been wanting to sleep about 15 or 16 hours per day.

Yesterday, he cut a tooth. Could teething be the culprit? Or should I be worried that there is something else going on? Has anyone experienced this?

Thank you in advance for any thoughts/advice...

What can I do next?

Teething and possible a growth spirt. Keep an eye on him and call the doc, incase there is an infection that is not causing a fever. For me I can have a sinus infection with no fever and that makes you more tired. Also teething can effect the sinuses..

Good Job paying attn to the details :) you are doing great.

Teething was my first thought. He's about at the right age to start cutting his 2-year molars.

Another option is that he's hitting a growth spurt. How's his appetite been? I know my kids will pig out on everything in sight, get a little chunky, stop eating and shoot up overnight.

I think it could absolutely be attributed to teething. My little guy slept a TON when he was cutting teeth. Even if it isn't that, I wouldn't really worry right now. He might be going through a growth spurt or he might be fighting off a little bug or something. I'd take advantage of the quiet time and do something you want or need to do! :)

This was the sleep schedule for both my children. I think its normal. They seem sleepier in the winter when its dark out.

Is this completely out of the norm for your son? He sounds very similar to my little guy.

My 20 month old sleeps from 6:30 or 7pm-7:30 or 8am. He wakes 3-5 times crying bit goes almost immediately back to sleep when I go to him.

He naps from 11:30am until anywhere from 2:45-4:30. His most typical nap lasts just under 4 hours.

On an average day my son sleeps between 15-17 hours. My older 2 used to sleep this much as well. I always chalk it up to the rapid growth they experience.

It's been my experience, that when they are sick, they DONT sleep. The teething could be the waking up 3-4 times a night. They really need uninterrupted sleep. He could be going through a growth period and just really needs sleep. If it isn't broke, don't fix it.

Is he a crazy little man? Does he expend a lot of energy? If so, he probably needs 3 hours of napping. He just splits his up.

Teething, growth spurts, high energy, perhaps a virus he is fighting - it can make him sleepy.

I wouldn't worry - I'd just nap right along with him. :)
