2012: What Do You Think About It?

With all the 2012 predictions and stuff, Im wondering how much thought (and fear?) you put into it. All this talk about planet X and what may happen, sometimes sounds pretty convincing to me, and I worry or sort of fear the future, with regard to my girls and family. I tell myself that there's been lots of such predictions in the past, (that havent come true), but they make it sound pretty probable. Common sense tells me to forget it, but a part of me thinks Im being ignorant (tho if it were all true, ignorance may be bliss!) What are your thoughts if any?

So What Happened?

wow, the responses were interesting. I was surprised that some people hadnt even heard of it, I started hearing about the mayan predictions in the mid 90's. The mayan predictions are only a fraction of the information about this. I read alot of conspiracy stuff, about New World Order, etc, and some of it (like government conspiracy, and there really being 1 world government, I do believe exist. There are alot of secret societies, and while it may seem farfetched, I think its true.) I mention that, because I think if there was really something about to happen, I dont think we'd be told, it would cause chaos worldwide. Planet X or Nibiru may or may not exist, but if we were to have the pole shift, from what I understand, this planets gravitational force would be strong enough to do it (so they say!) When the planetary alignment happened a few years back, they predicted alot of extreme weather and craziness, but in the end we had exceptionally high tides and crazy weather, crazy weather we still have, but the talk of global warming is also said to be responsible. Either way, Im facinated by all of this stuff, even if it does freak me out a bit I like a good read. I think there is much we dont know and even more undiscovered. But I knoow anything can happen, earthquakes ( I live in Surrey, BC, Canada, which is on the san andreas fault line, we have been due for the BIG one for awhile. I do worry that my kids and I wont be all in one place...) but I push it all away. I started reading about all this stuff, with a site called educateyourself.org and its been interesting... I dont watch tv or have time for books (my fave, but baby makes getting intoo a good book impossible) so I surf around for articles. Thanks to everyone for the great responses!!!

I am a history teacher and have studied the Mayans extensively. They did not update their calendar due to some catastrophe that forced them out of their organized cities and back into small villages. That is it. Their civilization declined and their complicated calendar was not as important anymore.

It seems that humans just love the thrill of a good threat. There are end-of-the-world fears that arise every few years, or every few generations, at best. When I was a little girl in school, we had duck-and-cover drills just in case an atomic bomb was dropped on us, as if that would have protected us.

There's really nothing better for me to do than to appreciate the potential of every day I get, and to stay right with my conscience. I'm going to die one way or another, and none of us really knows when that will be.

But we have today. And probably tomorrow, too. Cheers!

Well, if it happens there isnt much we can do about it now is there? Be prepared to meet your maker just in case. Enjoy each day like you only have a year to live? I don't give it much thought personally. It hasnt been jammed down our throats by the media. If it were true I think the political leaders of the world would have some sort of game plan that they would share with us.... at least I would hope they would. I don't think it will be the end of the world next year because the Bible clearly states that you wont know WHEN... so no man can predict the day. There are the signs tho, and we have plenty of those..... but 2012 is just a theory.

I have not read the other responses, YET.

I have not had fear of it, however, my daughter is due to graduate in 2013 from high school. I have picked up from her a concern..moreso than fear.

I found it odd when we were discussing college, just tonight... she laid out her plans which are very detailed and then she said.... " I believe I have a good business plan for my college and study abroad and everything shoud work out perfectly unless of course it is true and 2012 is the end"

At that point, I realized she really thinks about this more than I do. I rely on my faith, (she does too), but I do believe it is tough, especially for a teen to be pondering the what if's when they are working so hard right now to wonder if it is to not be worth the effort.

I just tell her to go with her faith and trust that God will be with her (and us) whatever happens. Live the dream, achieve the goals...Never give up

Another thought and Example....... We signed the contract on our home in Dec 1999. Sales were low that month because the world was going to end in 2000. We have a dream house with tons of privacy (wildlife etc) for us in the DFW area which is unheard of... While making the decision to write the contract and build, hubby said to the builder jokingly... " We are ready to sign. Worst case scenerio... the world ends and my contract is null and void.... the world continues, we are building a damn good house!" December 31 came and went.... 2000 entered and within 3 weeks of signing our contract.. the prices on the lots and homes went up more than 30%.

Just a thought!

Well, there are a lot of references in the Bible about the end days, and a lot of it has not yet come to pass, though many of it has. These things take time.

In either way, my life may end tomorrow in a car accident, or an earthquake may swallow my city up. So regardless of the end of the world, every day it will be the end of somebody's world, so we better just put on our boots and do the best we can. :)

I'll tell you this...the world can't possibly end in 2012, because the Rapture has not occured, nor has the tribulation which will follow it, which will be seven years long. Plus, a lot of things will happen before the Rapture that haven't happened yet...but could possibly happen soon.

So look at it this way...until millions and millions of people literally DISAPPEAR from the Earth with no "explanation", you have at LEAST seven more years.

I don't think that anyone can predict this. This is just a way to keep people in fear. In 2012, I'm going to turn 40 in peace! I'm going to celebrate 10 years of marriage and thank God that we made it! 2012 is my year of celebrating because of my joyous milestones. My son will graduate from kindergarten. I most definitely will have a new attitude.... So as for the world ending, I guess it will just have to wait for me because I'm going to rejoice!

I'm more concerned about foreclosure, where are all of these people going to live? I've seen more people on the street panhandling and the faces look so familiar....

People have been predicting the end of the world since the dawn of time.
I just think that it's human nature, really. I mean, what is the meaning of life? Why are we here? What does it all mean? None of us have the answers to any of that unless we answer from our own perspective.
I personally don't pay too much attention to any of these "end of the world" predictions. I mean, if the world ends, it ends. There's no way to prepare or prevent it.
A friend and I were just talking about this the other day and for heaven's sake, remember "Y2k?" So many people expected calamity and computers shutting down and complete global chaos.
It didn't happen.
Fear of the unknown is nothing new.
I think we should just live our lives as best we can from day to day. Most of the things we get really worked up about either never happen or aren't as bad as we thought they would be.
In my opinion, it's not being ignorant not to get worked up over some things.

Best wishes.

The reason why 2012 is supposed to be this "big" thing is because the Mayan's were really good astronomers. They were able to look at the stars and tell about the past as well as the future- this wasn't some magical guessing, but based on science and observation on how the stars moved over many, many years.
In the year 2012 there is supposed to be a "shift" in the alignment of stars(not something that happens over night, but the accumulation-is that the right word?- of what has been happening since the last "shift" over 2000 years ago)
Since we are not a stationary object in space- the stars that we see now are in a different position then they would have been 2000 years ago- this is what the predication was about- the movement and alignment of the stars-
The theory being that the different position of the stars would have a significant impact on our world(like the ocean waves are affected by the moon) causing some major natural events that would change the planet- kind of like if you were to scoot a pile of papers across your table until they eventually tipped off the table and onto the ground- 2012 would be the moment they tipped off the table.
Anyway- I thought this was very interesting because I had always heard that it was a prediction of the end of the world- but it isn't. It's just a prediction on the shifting of the universe based on science(of their time which was actually pretty accurate) and on the observation of the stars and their movement.
So, there's your history lesson for today! :)

No End of the World on my list. I don't believe that anything all horrible and nasty and Earth Shattering is going to happen anymore than I believe it will tomorrow or 2013 or 2020.
Bad things happen, good things happen but I don't believe in any way that it is the End of the World.

Hi--
I think the world is definitely shifting, but not in a negative direction. I think the "darkness" we have seen in our political systems, in the attacks on individuals, in the wars, and the earth catastrophe's we have seen are actually a cleansing of sorts. It is as if we are bringing light into the darkness so we may clean everything out. I believe 2012 is bringing a shift in awareness, or consciousness, that will help us to better love and respect each other. In the meantime, I think we will continue to see the chaos that has punctuated this last decade until everything is "clean".

If you believe in the "apocalypse" theories you must first realize what "apocalypse" actually means---it is greek for "revelation" or "lifting of the veil". It does not portend dire situations, simply a potent change.

Also, I believe that thought creates reality. If we focus our hearts and minds on healing, rather than tearing down, I believe we can truly change the world.

I would recommend reading Dan Brown's "The Lost Symbol". While it is a work of fiction, the themes threading through it our similar to what I have written here. It gave me hope to see the world in that way.

I read an article about a year ago about it. What it basically said (that made me feel better) was that this whole "End of the World" concept is a Catholic belief. The 2012 thing is based on the end of the Mayan calendar. They Mayans don't believe in the end of the world or all humanity coming to a screeching halt that they make it sound like will happen. People are mixing the beliefs of two seperate religions and beliefs to come up with this scarey stuff. In the past, at the end of a Mayan calendar, there has been change. Could be big. Could be small. Could be nothing at all. Maybe it's marking the begining of a technology world... or maybe the end of a war... maybe a baby boom.

Fact is, there's not a stinking thing you or anyone can do about it even if it were true. And it's not like the end of the world would come to you and your children would be left on the planet to fend for themselves. They'd be right there with you, just as confused. LOL! Relax. It'll all be fine. :)
