How many times have your children been sick this year?
Since October my 8 year old has had bronchitis, ear infections and flu's! Two rounds of antibiotics!
Crazy!
Is this just us, or do you find your kids have been sicker this year??...
We are working on nutrition, nutrition, nutrition! trying to handwash more..vitamins, juicing, etc...
Hoping this will help!

What can I do next?

According to my pediatrician this has been a horrible season, respiratory wise. She said she cannot count how many children she has seen with bronchiolitis and pneumonia. She aid that when the kids come home from school to wash their hand AND face and change their clothes. This will help other children in the home from getting sick too.
I also ran into a daycare teacher I know and she said so many children are sick with bronchitis and it is lasting a very long time. My friends children just had the swine flu as well.
I think flu shot and dtap boosters for all that need are a must!

I would recommend looking into food allergy testing through Immuno Laboratories....seems crazy I know but if your son is reacting to what he's eating it tears down the immune system. I had the testing done and stay healthier...all eleven items I was reactive to I can now have again except one...so ten of them were temporary allergies...I can provide more information if you would like...with multiple examples of how this has worked for others around me.

We have had less than normal sicknesses this year, until fall when we moved.... I've been sick twice in a month, this week my daughter, husband and myself all have had a wicked 24hr flu bug. I think there is just more around all the time, with so many people moving and traveling. I totally believe in finding natural ways to be healthier - this year when I got the respiratory deal, I went extra to my chiropractor and took a lot of vitamins... and this time it didn't go into pnuemonia, so I know it helped! Also, my 24hr flu lasted about 18 hours.... I am TOTALLY against the flu shot - do some research. It's only helpful to the pharmaceutical companies... not to the health of the American public. Here's hoping you all feel much better soon!

We went through a very similar sick spell in the spring of 2009. I was so completely frustrated and even had mild depression because of it. I don't feed my kids a lot of junk, we don't get flu shots and never will. Some things I know you can't help but get, but I believe there are more natural ways to ease symptoms and to prevent illness. I think there are way too many chemicals out there that are hurting our immune systems. A friend of mine once told me she'd never get granite counter tops because you can't bleach them and she uses bleach for everything. Well, her and her daughter are always sick. I figure if soap and warm water is good enough for my hands, it's good enough for my counters.

We rarely use hand sanitizer anymore, except for when we cannot get to soap and water. We make it a habit of washing when we come home, before we eat, etc. I use Lysol and other types of sanitizing cleaners very minimally. Don't wear shoes in the house to track in crud. We clean most things with vinegar and water. We're not big fans of medicines here and I think antibiotics are WAY over prescribed and do a lot more harm than good. We force ourselves to drink water, water, water. Get the kids outside and in the sun. We also started taking liquid silver periodically and I truly believe it's helped us to avoid major illness. Also taking yogurt/probiotics to keep your intestines on track (and especially when taking antibiotics!).

I feel your pain! Good luck!

My daughter is 3 and this year she has had 2 upper respatory infection, 1 ear infection. And 2 weeks ago she had the stomach flu. My daughter was 2 months premature so it seems like she catchs anything going around very easily. So I constantly use lysol spray, lysol wipes and have the whole family sanatize their hands. I do not think it is just you this year I have seen more ilness in my child as well! Hope your soon feels better soon!

I am so SICK of all of us being SICK! Yes, I feel like we were sicker in 2010. AND, I'm 40 and got through childhood and the rest of my life never having had strep throat until now! I had it about 3 weeks ago and now I think I have it again. I'm about to try and find a flippin' minute clinic that's open on NY Day. Over December alone my husband brought home some horrible cold and stomach virus, and then my 4 year old got the virus and then I had strep, then HE got strep and the 2 year old had a terrible sinus and ear infection. Then when I thought we were all getting better, the 2 year old got ANOTHER double ear infection and terrible cold. I thought back over the year, and in late February we all had a 24 hour stomach virus and in the late spring the boys each had an awful cold that led to sinus infections and ear infections. Over the summer was when they had the intermittent vomiting and diarrhea that lasted over 2 weeks!

I'm a huge believer in nutrition helping and preventing illness, but it hasn't worked with us this past year. We handwash and I have religiously lysoled and cloroxed everything during and after ever sickness. We change toothbrushes and take vitamins and at least the kids always get plenty of sleep. I know for me, this year has been extraordinarily stressful and over the last two months I've gotten very little sleep, so I blame that in my case, but my kids -who knows? They've both been around lots of other kids since birth. My oldest went to a 1/2 day preschool several times a week since he was 1 and my youngest went there for several months last year and is heavily involved in a playgroup with other kids several times a week. He did start full time preschool in August and my oldest went to full time PreK in August -so maybe it's just new germs? I don't know, but everybody has to get well and stay well soon before I lose it!

I find that lately our little girl has been so sick.
She is usually very healthy but perhaps it's the change in the weather, along with being away from the childminder (change in routine) and more biscuits etc available over the holiday season. That and more travelling around has weakened her immune system..
Can't wait to get back into a normal routine again with her

We got a cold in April, July, December. Nothing major just little colds. There are 7 of us and each time only 3 of us got it. It hasn't been a sick year for us. When the swine flu was at it's worst in 2009, I was pregnant but none of us got anything, whew! My kids were sick a lot more when they were young and had food allergies.

We've all been pretty healthy the last few years. We get our flu shots every year. My son got his DTap booster to start middle school and the rest of us will get it too since whooping cough is making such a come back. We try to get a little regular sunshine, try not to eat junk, and get some regular exercise. We tend to get some sniffles during spring/fall peak pollen times but rinsing with a neti pot helps keep that from getting out of hand.

Mine have been sick a few times too. It seems to circulate around the house. My son has had an upper respiratory infection twice in a month or so. The doctor diagnosed him with pneumonia at one point. My son had some wheezing too, so we had to use a nebulizer. Some kids are more prone to it getting into their lungs.

Hand washing is SO important. I think we underestimate how important it is. I would also say that it's important to make sure that your kids are vaccinated so that they are better able to fight off the flu and less likely to spread it to others.

Hope the illnesses pass quickly!

Happy New Year!

We're doing our standard rounds round these parts (knock on wood).

- "Seasonal Flu" in the summer (too many friends in the mideast & eastern europe... we catch the flu early)

- Sinus heavy cold this month

After K & 1st, however, everything seems light a "light" year. Ugh. We were sick every single month for at least a week in K, and every other month at least in 1st. We thought we'd get a "pass" on catching schtuff since I was working in a hospital and my H was at the university and Kiddo was in preschool... but nope! Everything that could be caught from school was caught in K... and even though we homeschooled starting in 1st most of the kids in his outside classes were in away-school... and parents send kids to school sick instead of keeping them home. It's just that simple. Doesn't help that for over 50 years our school district didn't have an attendence policy for k-2 (because kids get sick so often), and a very lenient one for 3-6, but the year before we started some idiot decided to make a "max" at 10 days. <rolls eyes> EVERYTHING started going through the elementary schools; strep, staph, flus, stomach flus, pertussis, bronchitis, pneumonia, the list goes on. It was simple enough to get a doctor's note to "appeal" the attendance issue, but that didn't stop the threatening letters from the district. Our K teacher sent home a notice once a month about how to appeal the attendance policy and to beg parents to keep their sick kids home... but by and large... most didn't.
