20 Month Old Climbing Out of Crib

The subject pretty much summs it up!!
I know to pad the floor for a fall, getting a tent to put over his bed (I know in due time he would be able to un-zip it), or to transition him to a toddler bed, but he is WAY to young in my opinion to be in a toddler bed.

This "monkey" of mine would be out of that bed and playing with the carpet if he had to (I would have to take all his toys, books, ect. out, I know) just to keep himself entertained all night long (and he would go all night long)!!

He also wakes many times through the night of night terrors (but usually can cry himself to sleep).

So I want to know, how do I keep him in the crib for at least a few more months? Do I sternly say; "It's time to go to sleep" and keep putting him back in time and time again? Do I say nothing and put him back in? Do I wait util he is so absolutly tired that he wont be able to scale the sides of the crib?

Please Help!!
Z.

Time to move him to a toddler bed, I moved my son @ 18mos. (I know it sounds young, I was freaked out @ 1st) but he is happy and stays in it. (Just be sure to shut the door)

Mine was the same. I put him in a toodler bed at 13 months when he started walking and climbing out of the crib. Figured if he wanted to play all night he will do it with any bed he was in so I got him as close to the floor as possible with a toddler. I put door handle safty grips on the inside of the door so he could not get out and shut the door after I let him pick a few toys to have in bed with him to go to sleep. Finally he got to the point where I could lay him down with toys he pick out and he would swap them out for new ones a few times but when no ones playing with you sleep comes easy and he would fall asleep. I keep a monitor in the room on the wall so I could hear him from where ever I was at in the house. When I went to bed if he was still up I would go in and put him in bed and tell him Mommy is sleepy and I'm going to bed like a good girl and you should to so we can play tommorrow and then I shut the door and took the monitor on low and went to bed. Once in awhile he would take a fit an scream and I would lay there listening not saying anything and he would realize Mommy is asleep and go to sleep himself. If he stays up to long cut his daytime naps to very short. His internal clock will adjust. Good Luck.

our son did the same thing at 16 months old. moms on my block told me to forget the tent... waste of money. our doctor said to put him in a toddler bed, so we did. it was fine from the beginning, and our son is nuts! you have to put a gate on the door and basically you turn the whole room into a "crib"... make sure it's child-proofed. it was about a month long transition for us. for the first week we rocked him to sleep and then laid him down in bed. the rest of the month we stayed next to him while he fell asleep. after that it's been completely fine. he's now 2.5 and I'm so glad we made the transition when he was younger rather than now, when they are much more aware of what's going on and have more definite preferences. go for it! the normal age to begin transitioning to a bed is 18 months. I don't know why people wait so much longer... seems silly to me.

When my son was 18 months he was exactly the same. We did transition him to a toddler bed. The first nights were like you described, he didn't want to stay in bed, he was playing at odd times etc. After a few days he settled down and slept through the night again. The new feeling will be gone.
Plus if he is able to climb out now, isn't that the same as getting up from the toddler bed? At least it is a whole lot safer.

IF he's climbing out, he's not to small for a toddler bed. My oldest was in a toddler bed by 18 months. You should use the same approach you mentioned at the end of your request with him in a toddler bed. It may be hard at first, but climbing out of the crib is dangerous! Good luck!
