My husband and I are going away for a long weekend this weekend and leaving our daughter who turned two in December with my parents. We have left her with my parents before overnight or for a weekend, but it has been several months since we have done so due to my mom's recuperation from back surgery in October. We took her over this past Saturday so she could spend the day while we travelled to Ohio for the day. She did not nap during the day. Mom said all of a sudden around 6pm, she looked out the window and started crying for mommy. Was inconsolable until she finally fell asleep on mom's shoulder. She has never done this before, however now she is a little older. I am worried that she will do this all weekend on them and I will be miserable knowing she is crying for mommy. I am pretty sure she did this only because she was tired from not napping and would have been fine by the next morning if she had spent the night. But I'm still worrying! Is this normal behavior for this age?
Go have a good time. Daughter will have a good time bonding with grandma and grandpa. She needs to learn that there are other people in her life that will care for her and keep her safe.
I think mommy has separation anxiety more than baby.

It's very likely she was only inconsolable because she was tired. If she gets upset because she misses you, she will get over it fairly quickly when distracted by something fun -- could be bubbles, grandma's cookie jar, newspaper comics, sitting in grandpop's special chair, anything that's new to her. Or else, if she's tired, she'll fall asleep and wake up refreshed and happy. She is not going to cry uncontrollably the entire time you are away, I promise!
And yes, this is totally normal!

The other thing to remember is when she gets older she'll have no memory of this and it will not be anywhere near traumatic enough to have a lasting impact... promise!
Totally normal. She's going to have a blast, but she'll also cry on-and-off throughout the weekend- especially at times when she's tired or when you have a special "routine" that you do.
My son does this occassionally to my husband (at nearly 4) when I have to travel for work. 99% of the time, he's pushing me out the door because they have "guy stuff" to do, but there are those times when he cries because he wants me. When I get home and ask him about it the answer is pretty simple "I just missed you Mommy" and then he's off doing something.
