2 Yr Old Swallowed a Single Magnet (I Think)

The dr should call me back in an hour, but I'm a little freaked out. My son just swallowed a magnet about the size of a pencil eraser. (I think). I say I'm not sure because I think there were two little magnets on this decoration he grabbed. I found one magnet. There may have been just one. I don't remember. So if he swallowed it, then it's just a SINGLE magnet, which I think is good since it won't stick to another magnet in his digestive tract. But I didn't find another post on here about stories of kids that have done this. Please tell me I don't need to go to the emergency room. 3 out of 3 people I talked to on the phone (MIL, mom, gal who answered at dr office) all said they think it will pass. I gave him a fiber-filled lunch. Any thoughts or happy stories to share?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Dr said it should pass. I'll post on here later an update if indeed it passed or what. Dr. said to call back if son complains of tummy ache or if he becomes constipated. Thanks for y'all's quick responses to ease my mind. Can't wait to look through poo! :-I

He'll pass it. Give him fruit, graham crackers, oatmeal, any high fiber stuff, and don't stress too much-- he'll be fine.

Kind of along the same lines. I love the show "America's Funniest Home Videos". One episode showed this little girl who swallowed a penny. Dad had a metal detector. First day the detector went off near her belly, second day same thing, third day the detector went off near her bum, forth day it didn't go off at all!! hahaha!!

I tend to agree with all the people you spoke with, it will probably pass on its own. Good luck, I hope the dr gets back to you soon to ease your mind.

I would take this very serious. I watched an episode once of "Your kid ate what" on TLC where a young boy swallowed a few magnets, all of them passed except one that caused severe stomach problems for him 6 mnths later. The parents thought everything was fine since they had seen them passing but the magnet was corroding or something like that in his intestines so definitely get an xray to see exactly what's in there. Good luck to you, I hope everything works out great!

You did the right thing by calling the pediatrician - follow their advice.

Chances are, they'll tell you to check the stools for a few days to verify that it passed. If it's the size you mention, it should pass easily. Pending the strength of the magnet, they may be more concerned, but it doesn't sound like anything other than a waiting game and a good story for many years to come once you can get past the craziness.

Good luck.

The dr. may have you go get an xray to just verify that he did swallow it and that it was only one.

I would take him to the ER, just to be on the safe side.

When my daughter was a baby she swallowed a dime. dr didnt have me come in or x-ray or anything. he said it would pass on its own, and a few days later i was changing her diaper and there it was! don't worry to much about it.

I agree, you will find it on it's own if he did. other than maybe tasting bad or it might cause him a stomach ache from the glue and who knows what else was on it, he should be fine......

You've only just begun, my daughter's bio mom pierced her ears w/o our consent, (we had custody) and off and on I would find earrings that she ate.......I kept getting blamed by bio mom of taking them out, but nope, she did and ate them. And she would take her again and get her ears pierced......which was stupid......

In any event, she was fine........good luck and take care.

As long as the item isn't toxic or sharp and is small, then he will pass it. Keep checking him poo throughout the days and make sure. If in a couple days it hasn't, take him to the doc.
