My daughter had her tonsils and adnoids removed as well as a 2nd set of tubes on Friday. She, as of Sunday, refuses to take her pain medication that was given to her by the doctor, but will take motrin and/or tylenol (So we give her that..). She is eating and drinking SOME, but her breath is TERRIBLE!!! They say that this is normal, but how long is normal? She is also experiening this yucky cough? Has anyone else experienced this after this type of surgery? She has terrible allergies, so initially I was attributing it to that, but I am very close to taking her in to see her doctor. How long should I expect my poor little one to be so miserable? NOT to mention, my 8 year old is having sympathy pain for her (through her stomache) and does not want to go to school (I think she is afraid to leave her)!! My heart is hurting for both of them and any advice to help make this transition more comfortable is welcome! (Food advice, pain relieving advice... etc)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone for their help! I just stayed consistent with the Tylenol and stopped the motrin. I had heard about the bleeding, just thought it was the day of surgery not to give it. She made it through her first night last night without waking up screaming! I made sure to push the liquids even more and had her humidifier turned up in her room. I think the moisture in the air and increased liquids really did the trick! Ok so now we have a really muffled voice... if it's not one thing it's another right?

It took our 2 year old 10 days before he felt better. I would just keep offering popcicles and ice cream and other soft foods and just love on her. It will get better, but this will be the worst two weeks that you have to go through. I do not envy you. I am glad that is one surgery that we are done with.

The good news is that the pain will be worth it. Our son had his surgery over the summer and only got sick once this cold and flu season so just get through the next 5 days and I promise you that it will get better!

When my now 16 year old was 6 he had his adnoids removed and he has awful allergies. He had a cough and bad breath for at least a week. He had so much drainage when they did the surgery and that is why he ended up with the cough. Even with his cough he was not feeling bad for more then 24 hours. He did eat soft foods for abotu the first 48 hours. Ice cream was his favorite.

You should call your ENT and run the symptoms by him/her and make sure it is all normal. It seems like she should be feeling alot better by now. Good luck.

A friends son did this, but he was doing well for the first 2 or 3 days, and then it seemed like he crashed for about 4 days!! I remember her complaining about similar symptoms, so I say that while you should check in just to make sure, it sounds fairly normal. He had to eat soft foods, lots of popsicles etc, for like a week before he was willing to do more. As for the older child, I would probably let her stay for one day, but then after that let her know that school cant wait, and that if she is really so sick, maybe a visit to the doctor and seclusion to her room is the key. I am sure all will be well within a few days! Hang in there ~A.~

Hi T., I don't remember my daughters breath stinking after the surgery but I remember the doctor being very adamant on NO MOTRIN!!! It can cause very dangerous bleeding that you won't see. Tylenol only!!!

My daughter had her tonsils & adenoids removed at 2. She also has terrible allergies. It took about a week or so for her fever to go away. Her breath was also very bad; it too went away in about a week or so. It took about 2 weeks for my daughter to fully recover. I just did what I could to keep her comfortable. We gave her tylenol for the pain and whatever soft stuff (milkshakes, etc) she wanted.

Good luck.

my daughter had tonsils at adenoids out at 18 months. my son had adenoids out at 22 months. the bad breath is very normal!! it will last about 2-3 weeks.. hang in there!!

my daughters recovery took about 8 days.. i would just continue on the tylenol if she can cope with it, just be sure to give her something! i had my tonsils out at 25 years of age and it was miserable! thankfully she is young and will recover sooner! be sure to push the liquids - this helps tremendously!

one recommendation for food, when i was recovering i tried spaghetti o's - it seemed ok in my mind.. the tomato sauce was a painful experience!! keep her with bland foods and at a warm or cold temp

My DS had his tonsils out in June (he was 4) and BFF's DD who is 2 just had hers out in Feb.

Based on both of our experiences and what the doctors told us, what you are saying is very normal.

The cough was so persistant with BFF's DD that she called the doc to check on it and they said it is very normal.

The breathing can be off until the swelling goes down and that can take 7-10 days.

My DS really didn't have as many problems as BFF's DD and we really attributed it to the age difference. At 2 you can't really convince them to do anything.

The best thing you can do is offer drinks every few minutes and let her eat what ever she will eat.

As pitiful as she seems, it really sounds like she is doing pretty good, especially since she isn't taking the Rx pain med!

My Daughter also had a second set of tubes and her adnoids out. The smell of her breath would about knock you out. almost like something rotting. It was awful. We brushed her teeth, gave her mints everyting. But after about two weeks, she went back to normal. My daughter also did not like the paid meds and we gave her motrin also. She did great. Hang in there.
