Please any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. My 2 yr. old all of a sudden started drinking excessively(he does eat) I mean all day and night. And if I refuse, he explodes.(screaming;for a long time, and falls out)
He is drinking water, water mixed with juice, and I have to sneak milk if he wants something late at night.
He has not been tested for diabetes.

What can I do next?

Especially since you are saying that this is a new behavior, I would be tempted to call the doctor and ask him if it could be an indication of something. It could be any of a number of things or it could be nothing...a doctor is the one who can find the definitive answer for you.

Please don't wait another day to have him tested for Type 1 diabetes. If it's not that, then at least you've ruled it out right away. If it is diabetes, the doctor needs to start treating him right away. Either way, you'll know for sure.

If it's not diabetes, be persistent in asking the doctor if any other medical conditions could cause such sudden, excessive thirst. The intense screaming when you refuse could be either due to real thirst or pure control issues -- it's almost impossible to tell with a child this age who can't really express himself yet. But ruling out something medical, especially with such a sudden onset, is essential. If you call today, I bet the doctor will want to see him ASAP.

it could be anything, but excessive drinking can indicate an issue with the kidneys, I'd call his doctor

Does he wake up in the middle of the night thirsty? I was concerned about my sons drinking too, but since he wasn't waking up thirsty the doctor said he was fine. You may still want to talk to your doctor too.

I would say that this doesn't sound normal. Not sure if it could be behavioral or if something medically could be causing this. I would suggest asking his doctor.

Definitely get him tested for diabetes and anything else your doc suggests. He is likely just doing it for attention, especially the screaming. If he isn't drinking enough milk, I would offer a sippy cup of milk after 1 glass of water. Juice isn't necessary, especially more than 4 ounces a day, if he is truly thirsty, he will drink the milk.

I agree with the medical checkup to rule anything physical. My little cousin was diagnosed with Diabetes age 4 but she had more symptoms than just thirst...tiredness, moodiness, always "sick"....all symptoms related to wildly varying blood sugar.

But your comment that "he explodes" if you refuse to give him a drink sounds more like a typical two year old wanting to get his way. Just a thought.

Good luck and best health to your little man.

my daughter did that at that age, shes 4 now and its pretty much gone, i never had her tested for anything since she had no other symptoms....I think it was a comfort for her, I nursed until she was 2 and the screaming for juice or water went on from 2-3 years old so I'm sure it was related to that for us.

Hi, Babydoll:
Go to your drug store and buy the paper strips to test for Diabetes.
Ask your pharmacist for the paper if you can't find it.
That will put your mind at rest.

If that doesn't give you a clue, call and talk to the peds nurse.

Good luck.
