2 Yr Old Coughing at Night

My 4 year old went through that and his Doctor recently diagnosed him with asthma. The doctor told me when he was a year old he might have asthma, but it was too early to diagnose it. Has she had this problem before? My son had mucus on his lungs when he was less than a month old, then at a year old he got bronchitis. Last year he had a really bad cough and I put him back on his inhaler and it cleared up, then about two months ago he got a cold and then came the really bad cough. He also had mucus on his lungs again. We put him back on the inhalers and it cleared up. It seems that his colds cause his asthma to flare up.

My son is 1 1/2, and he has been doing hte same thing. His pediatrician said it could be from the heater being on and the room getting stuffy and to warm. He said it was nothing to be worried about. If it really bothers him and he gets cranky I gove him Robatussin cough nighttime. I think the pediatric one is like 1 teaspoon for 2 year olds. Hope this helps, let me know what happens.

The same thing was happening to my friend's son when he was 3 or 4 years old. After a few months of coughing & trying everything they discovered that there was mold in the wall right next to his bed. Once they fixed that (after tearing down the wall and rebuilding) the coughing problem stopped.
Of course this is just one example; you should probably check with your pediatrician first.

Have any of you thought about asthma? My son had a cough that sounded like a seals bark. But after he had it for a month the doctor finally said it was asthma. He was put on an inhaler and hardly coughs anymore, although it did take about 2 weeks to see an improvment. The doctor said that she has seen A LOT of asthma in children from the end of last year to the beginning of this year. I hope all of your babies get better fast!

Base on my personal experiece.
My daughter was 2 when she develop the same symtoms, coughing at night and in the morning. She was dignose with Asthma you should have her seen her doctor as soon as posible. Also monitor that her enviroment is super clean, no cat's around her, no strong odor's like cleaning suplies of perfums. my daughter had a test for allergies and she is allergic to many things.Another person who develop asthma is my sister and she had the same symtoms, so you should contact her pediatrician soon.

My son has been doing the same thing for about a week now. He's 21 months old. I've asked him if his chest hurts and he keeps telling me no. I thought it might be allergies with all of the stuff blooming right now. I've been giving him Claritin for a couple of days and it doesn't seem to be helping much. I have a call into his dr's office to see if there is something going around. I'm waiting to hear back. He doesn't have any fever, his cough isn't raspy or anything, no runny nose. Just that dang cough! I'll see what I find out and let you know!

it could be something as simple as dust or allergies , I would talk to her pediatrician or a family doctor to make sure. my son had the same problem and his kept saying it was allergies she was wrong . we live in the desert where it is very dry and when that happens we break out the humidifier , after that he was fine and he only needs the humidifier when he is truly sick. still I would check with a doctor or pediatrician you trust.his peditrician kept misdiagnosing him all the time even when he got pnemonia , she still insisted it was allergies, which it was not , and no asthma either those might be some other choices.

My son had the same problem. The coughs would always turn into a nasty full-blown cold, though, and last forever. I kept telling the doc I was SURE he had allergies. They kept saying no, he was too young. Well, I finally convinced a doc he might and he's been on Zyrtec ever since and done SOOOO much better. Now, when he gets the coughs, they only last a couple days. Don't let the docs scare you about asthma (like they did me). Just be honest with them about all the symptoms, though, and let them see what works. Trust your instinct. My doc told me the best was Dimetapp Cold and Cough and it does my son well when he does get the coughs in the night. Good luck!

My daughter is also 2 years old, I have gone to the doctor's office every other week for the past 2 months because of her horrible cough. The doctor has contributed her cough to allergies and put her on Singular, my husband and I had her on that for 3 weeks and took her off because we did not see any improvement. Because of Kayla's running nose, she seems to have quite a bit of mucas which is causing the cough. I have not found a remedy yet, but her cough gets better the less her nose runs.

My daughter had the same problem not long ago. At first they thought it was a mild case of asthma. Then later they found out it was bad drainage from a cold she has a while back(1 1/2 months before). She had the cough for a while but we couldn't figure ot why. They but her on an liquid antibotic. I don't know if that is what is wrong with your daughter but wouldn't hurt to get it checked out. We knew it wasn't asthma because the inhaler wasn't helping. She took the inhaler maybe 3 times. The doctor said if it was asthma the inhaler would have stopped it.

My daughter has the exact same thing. Seems to be going around according to our doctor. It's been three weeks for her, so yesterday, I took her to doc. He said she has an ear infection and prescribed antibiotics. Also, she has a croupe cough. Best advice for that is to take her into the bathroom and run a HOT shower. Then immediately take her outside in the cold to open up the lungs. (i thought this was odd but it's exactly what they do in emergency rooms if a kid arrives with congested lungs).
I would recommend taking her to the doctor to check for infection. It's going around. Good luck.

my now 4 yr. old started around then. the doctor suggested a "COOL MIST" humidifer. she explained that the cold air then dry warm air from heaters zapps all the moisture out. Also, around that time my son was diagnosed with season asthma. so try the humidifer if it doesn't help might want to go to the doctor.
hope the humidifer trick will help if you try it.

My daughter got that a lot around that age all the way until she was nearly 5. Anytime it was cold season, or someone got a cold, she would get the cough.

My doctor's usually told me it was viral and that they couldn't do anything, but sometimes when it went on and on for 5 weeks, they would prescribe antibiotics. Which did help.

So I would take your little girl to the doctor, see if they can help, and or also get her checked for asthma (sp).

I would take him to a doctor, my son did this too for about 2 months. I finally took him in and he was diagnosed with really mild asthma.

Hello T.. I'm not quite sure what it is...could be allergies, or a small case of asthma or bronchitis? I would definitely take her to the doctor to have her checked out. Hope that helps!

Have you had her checked for asthma? I know that's one of the symptoms. My son has asthma and he has the most trouble at night. He doesn't even realize that he's coughing all night long if we don't give him a breathing treatment. I would definitely tell your doctor and have her checked, it could get serious.

Is it possible she has become alergic to something in her room? Have you changed her bedding or even your laundry soap lately? It's also possible something got on her hair and is now on her pillow. I would wash all her bedding in hot water and if that doesn't work, try eliminating anything that might cause an alergic reaction. Hopefully that will stop her coughing.

If kids have certain problems (i.e. sinus congestion) it is very common for them to cough only at certain times, especially bedtime. My son does the same thing, so it probably isn't anything to serious. I would recomend just giving her some medicine for congestion and see if that helps. If not, you may want to consider taking her to the doctor for some prescription medication. Good luck with that!

Hi T.. My son started doing this too and it turned out to be bronchitis. Has your child ever had this before? It may be an onset of this. Sometimes, my son still starts hacking at night and I get nervous that its another bout of bronchitis coming on. Take her to the pediatrician and see if he can find out what's going on. Your best bet is to just take her to the doctor. I had a problem with this as a child, as did my younger sister, and we were both diagnosed with asthma shortly thereafter (in many children, asthma presents itself as a hacking cough, not a shortness of breath, with no pain or discomfort accompanying the cough). Her cough could be something as small as a virus that wont go away or simple allergies, or it could be something more serious such as bronchitis or asthma. Taking him to the DR will give you a for sure answer, whether serious or not,
