2 Yr Old Afraid of Bugs!!

My son will turn 2 at the end of May. We recently went down to TN for a week vacation to see his grandma and grandpa. We spend as much time as possible outside playing. Well, while we where down there he found some ladybug's in the yard. I picked one up and put it on my hand so he could see it better. He flipped out!! He know is scared to even go in the grass and looks for bugs every where he goes. When he see's a bug he freezes and just starts crying. He won't move or anything. He has two bug books which he loves to read so I figured he would be fine with them once he saw them for real. Has anyone else had this happen with your child? If so, did they out grow out or is there anything I can do to help him realize they will not hurt him?

What can I do next?

My advice - get used to it. I have 4 boys- 9, 6, 3 1/2 and 5months and my 3 older boys are TERRIFIED OF ALL BUGS... its drive dh and i nuts.

Last summer my 3rd- just turned 3 then- would throw bugs at his brothers just to watch them scream and run- but now this year hes terrified. He's having nightmares about bumble bees after his first nice romp outside...

I was never like that I liked bugs, snakes and frogs so its a new thing... but I guess I wasn't given girls but got some girl traits in my little men??? We just let them be and hope they will outgrow it someday....

My daughter went through the same thing around 2, I just kept showing her bugs, adn telling her what they did (they are looking for their mommy...can you help them?) and explained which ones would hurt her and which ones want to be her friend. It took about 2 whole summers but after all of that shes been fine. Now she even goes out of her way to find her bug-friends!

lol...don't worry it will pass, my daughter was the same at 2 years old, I tried to get her to touch a catapiller and she freaked, but by next summer she completely forgot and touches bugs now, so this might be a one summer deal, just don't push the issue with him cause at 2 they kinda have thier mind made up, my daughter is now 4 1/2 and she picks bugs up all the time

Is there anyone around him that doesn't like bugs? another child or even adult that doesn't like bugs? I have a daughter around the same age and she copies everything she sees. He may have seen someone else get scared or freak out over a bug and that may have made him afraid of them. I wouldn't make a big deal out of it though. It's not like bugs are a huge part of life and everyone is afraid of something. At least he's afraid of something that it's easy to avoid. He might also freak out at bugs because he noticed that it gets your attention. Kids that age will repeat anything thats gets them attention. well, good luck with your little guy.
