2 Y.O. Having Tonsils out...Mom Is Freaking a Bit

I went thru this with my 7 year old niece recently.
She got very scared before hand but did fine. Do it
young or you'll have more emotions to deal

While I don't have experience with the tonsil issue, my four year old son Bryce did have to go through multiple surgeries last year due to a sudden and life threatening illness that had him in the hospital for 99 days. I know it's tough, each time they carried him away was so stressful...the thought of anesthesia and intabation was almost more than I could bear but in each case, it had to be done for him to get well. Really, all you can do is put your faith and trust in the Lord to see your little one through and pray fervently for the doctors to be blessed with knowledge and skill while doing the surgery. You'll get through it with no problems I'm quite sure.

My son had his tonsils out at the age of 2 as well and he did great. Here is what I recommend to put your mind at ease. Have it done at a pediatric hospital, either Children's or Medical City. They have the anesteologists and staff trained in pediatrics. Also insist to stay at least one night. This way he is monitered and if heaven forbid something happen, he's already there and can be taken care of quickly. My son stayed for several days, but it was only because he refused to take oral medicine and so it was better to pain manage IV till he was better and we could go home. I know a few wonderful ENTS at Medical City if you'd like a referal. Best of luck.

If he needs them out - do it while he is young. The younger they are the better they do - for real!!

My story is that as an adult I would get untreatable strep throat that would put me in the hospital. at age 38 I had my tonsils and adenoids out - and I would NOT ever do that again.

My point is that if you do it now - you could spare yourself and your child years of problems later on...

I don't know if this will help you or not but my son had his tonsils and adnoids removed at about the same age because they where so large he wad having sleep apnea. He had already had several surg for tubes . The surg went fine my only prob with him is he refused to eat or drink and I had to take him to the er twice for dehydration , on the second trip I threw a fit cause they were just like your going to have to make him drink and that is impossible with a 2 yr old so they admitted him and he ended up staying 5 days. Having said that and knowing what I know now I would not change my decission to do it. He has been a whole lot better since and doesn't get sick like he did.

Don't know if this will help - but - when my son was 2 (now 4 1/2) they recommended him to have his toncils removed, however he did not weigh enough for the surgery... Thus, he did not have it done... We went to an allergist - No allergies, but they discovered that his immune levels were not that great and they ended up giving him Prevenar? (sorry don't really recall the exact name) but it was a vacination given mostly to seniors to boost the immune system.
Anyway - since then he has had less illnesses... His toncils still get swollen; but he gets over illnesses quicker...
So, perhaps you may want to get a second opinion first?

I am a single mom and I bravely had both of my kids tonsils, adnoids and ear tubes taken out on the same day. This was two years ago October my kids were 3 and 4 years old. But they have had less problems with sinuses and sore throats etc since we had them out. Sotck up on gatorade, and tons of popsicles and motrin. My kids only took the pain medication maybe twice and that was it we took the week easy at home watching movies.
I have to say its one of the best things that we had to get done.
