Dear Mommas, Merry Christmas to all who celebrate. probably not the best day to ask a question, but here goes :) My 2 YO son has had a constant stuffed nose with green mucus for almost 3 months. There have been a few days where it stopped (after anti biotics for strep etc.) but then it started. I consulted with 2 pedis, they both agreed that he probably has something like polyps in his sinuses that may need to be taken out later in life. For now, we have to deal.

Sooo. to ease the stuffiness without medicine, do you all have ideas. The dr. recommended saline solution in an inhaler 2 x's a day? Heard of this?

Thanks as usual for your good advice.

Have great days. Jilly

i agree with jeanie, it sounds like he has a lot of sensitivities going on. Im the the same way. my sinus's are so sensitive that just walking through the laundry detergent aisle at the store swells my sinus's so much that its like instant block to my breathing. i had to start ordering all of our cleaning, body care stuff, deodorizer, etc online because the fragrance wasnt so harsh, they have a spray that kills dust mites (MAJOR cause of allergens) and its all naturally based and a bunch cheaper then the stuff at the store. (feel free to message me if you want, ill get you all the info if you want) You also want to cut out as much dairy as you can, that can make mucus glands work overtime!

I would consult an allergenist. If he is allergic to something you will end up with chronic sinus infections. I would check that route out. Saline is the best, keep doing it like every 30 mins to every half hour. A pain I know but the best way to flush the yuck out.

Merry Christmas to you Too!!

I would agree with the saline solution, it can help, but really I would see an allergist or ENT and get a second opinion. Good Luck 2YO and messy noses are not fun!

Take him off all dairy products. Milk, cheese, mac n cheese, pizza, golfish crackers, yogurt and anyhitng else that has milk or soy in it. Replace those items with reproductions of those items that you can buy at Whole Foods. I promise you in 2-3 weeks you will have a new child both behaviorally and healthwise. It's simple as that.

Oh boy - I once had pages on this topic.

Using a Neti Pot (salt water poured into one nostril that comes out the other nostril) is a standard treatment which is benign and healing. My younger daughter grew up using the thing, and in my mind, I daily thanked the pediatrician who directed us to have her start using that.

Hepa filter in the vacuum cleaner.

Electrostatic filter in the furnace.

Hypo-allergenic bedroom setup.

Humidifier in the winter months.

Low sugar diet to help with balance in the gut (less candida from antibiotic use)

Course of probiotics. Redone every time antibiotics are used.

Food sensitivity testing. I wish so badly that the allergist had told us about the connection. I never thought about asthma, allergies, and congestion being related to FOOD issues! I kind of suspected it with the older daughter and her milk consumption but that's all. And then to find it even was connected with her later "mental" illness (http://www.itsnotmental.com) was astonishing especially because the research really has been present on this topic dating back over 30 years ago!
