My 2 year old and my 8 month old both have eczema. My 2 year old has is pretty bad on the back of her legs and in between her arms. I have a prescription that the doctor gave me to us on it but said to us it sparingly that it thins her skin. So my question is there anything that I can us that will work just as well and not thin her skin? Any suggestions are welcome.

What can I do next?

My nephew had a huge problem with this. I am in agreement with some of the other responses when they talk about allergies. My sister found that wheat was the main culprit for her son. She was only sad to find that he suffered so long with it and not even the specialist mentioned that to her. Also she stopped using fabric softners and uses the all free and clear detergent.

T.,
I know exactly what you're going through, my 11 month old has Eczema as well. I've noticed that tomato based foods really make it flair.. also fragranced laundry detergents really irritate their skin more, try using a fragrance free and allergin free detergent. that will help also. What i use for my babies Eczema is the regular 1% hydrocortisone cream to relieve the itchiness and redness. Only use that twice a day, and aquaphor on over the hydrocortisone. Use the Aquaphor as much as you want/possible throughout the day. This helps my child tremendously!! Also, I've just started using the new product by Aveeno- called Eczema Care. So far so good. :)
Another thing you can do to relieve the itch and redness is the baby aveeno Oatmeal Baths! All of the products i mentioned are available at wal mart, target, etc. Hope i could help ya!

hi, my son has had that since he was born. he is 3 now and still has it but not near as bad. my ped doc perscribed me Luxiq, it is a foam that you put on the spots. i found it to be the best stuff ever. its more expensive but it really worked for me. he gave me samples first and i loved it. ask you doctor. he also said to lube them up 2 times a day with vaseline. yes that right yuck but it works, morning and night. right after there bath is the best to trap moisture. girl i feel you, good luck with it.

Hi my name is E.. Myself, my five year old and my four year old have excema my son the four year old the worst!~ He scratched so much last year that he had staph five times! That kinds of tells you the extreme that we have been through!
We have done th eallergy testing and only allergic to mesquite, weve taken milk away and animals but its still there! So within the past six months we have done the following and it has helped emensly!

1.He gets a fast barely warm bath, We us Dove (dye and scent free) soap all over body, and johnson and johnson baby shampoo for the hair. As soon as they get out of the bath i dry there hair and lather them all over with CETAPHIL CREAM!
2. We use Tide (dye and scent free) no fabric softners but you could also use dreft too but it gets expensive with a toddler I remember washign all the time
3. Aveeno overnight itch relief for when the itching is bad at night. or day too!
4. The doctor prescribed tricimilon cream (there is an ointment also but it feels greasey) the cream is thick and we put it on him thick after we rub some in!
5. Sunshine! Being out in the sun in shorts helps a whole lot!
6. keep fingernails very short so they cant scratch!
7. My son was also on atarax for itching at night! (off and on when its bad)
This is the main things that we do and it has helped alot with all three of us! I hope it helps you too!
Hang in there one day the itch will be gone!

Food allergies are a huge cause for eczema, also as Elizabeth said scented detergents, anything fragranced, use unscented Dove, free and clear detergents, do double rinses on all clothing.
Also, I am on a food allergy forum and most of the moms on there use vanicream (order on line or through pharmacy), and wet-wrapping- a technique to keep in the moisture. Good luck!

Hello T.,

Have you ruled out food allergies? soy, ragweeds, milk, wheat, nuts? they all can lead to eczema. btw, sunflower, safflower are ragweeds. have them tested for allergies. read ingredients on all packages of food, laundry, body products, etc. ~C.~

Ditto on looking at the cause in the form of potential allergens (80% of eczema is due to allergies). The most likely culprit is wheat. Also, there is something called dermatitis herpetiformis that is a skin reaction from eating wheat (or any gluten containing grain). It looks like eczema and most doctors will call it that, unless they do a biopsy of the skin. This is an autoimmune reaction to the wheat gluten and the solution is a gluten-free diet. YOu can find more info at www.celiac.com (there's a link to the left for a description of this disease if this link is chopped:
http://www.celiac.com/categories/Dermatitis-Herpetiformis...

It is genetic, which makes me suscpicious given that both your children have eczema. It's also highly underdiagnosed and many pediatricians won't test for it because they were taught in medical school that it's rare - it's not. Newer research is showing that as many as 1 in 10 have sensitivites to gluten.

Hi T.,
Hang in there--I know it's tough. My 8-yr old son has flare ups sometimes and my boyfriend's 11-yr old son has chronic eczema! His is so bad that sometimes his skin breaks and he bleeds! He has been to several dermatologists and one thing seems to be consistent--keep the skin moisturized. Use dye/scent free detergents and soaps. Wash will mild, perfume-free soaps like Dove. Use Vaseline to moisturize the skin. Oil of Olay lotion w/shea butter, Eucerin, and Aquaphor are all good lotions too. Good luck!! :)

My 2 yr old is exactly the same way. His allergist also gave us a cream to use in extreme cases, but on a daily basis here's what he said to do:
Give him a lukewarm bath (the hot water dries out the skin more), then barely pat him dry. We lather him up pretty generously each night after his bath with Aveeno oatmeal lotion that is fragrance free. Equate makes one that is equally as good. Put his pajamas (long sleeve and long pant) on over all the lotion, so he won't scratch. It took about a week of doing this each night to see a change, but if we are consistant to do it, we have noticed a lot less flare ups.

Hope this helps,
G.

Renew lotion and Renew oil. Use the oil in her bath and then the lotion after the bath. Natural product. Private email me so I can show you where to get samples. Yes it could be a type food she is eating or allergens in the home. I have a friend that her daughter had it real bad. She would scrub the house spotlessly clean with all those cleaners that carry the very chlorine bleach and abrasives that were trigger or add to the problem. She switched her household to Natural cleaning products use the Renew oil for her bath and then the Renew lotion-her daughter now has relief.
Good luck.

I am sorry to hear your little ones have to deal with this. You may have already looked into he root cause of the ezcema, but in case you have not....I have a friend whose little guy was bleeding his ezcema was so bad. They found that dairy and msg's were the culprit. Without these in his diet he has no ezcema at all. I thoght it might be worth mentioning.

Also, Collodial silver can be sprayed on the area and would be much better for such fragile skin.

I hope you get it all figured out soon. May The Lord give you wisdom.

T., I have 3 sons, twins they are 4 and 17mnth old & they hve had eczema since birth, so bad they would bleed I tried so many things, baby eczema creams, vaseline, perscribed medicines which i am to use sparingly & they cont. to brake out really bad, well i have a new pedi & she is wonderful. My sons have not had a break out since they have been seeing her, and my 17mnth old has not showed signs for mnths now. Here is what i do. I shower them with, Cetaphil bath wash, it is expensive & when i run out i use Dove for sensative skin, quick baths, use Aveeno shampoo for their hair. While they are still a little wet, lather them with Cetaphil cream, when they wake, more cetaphil cream, I keep them cool in the summer because sweat makes it worse, and I carry the cetaphil w/ me everywhere since I use it atleast 3x a day on them. to keep them moisturized, I keep their hands clean w/ hand sanitizer if they scratch it won't spread as many germs to the affected areas & if the areas get really bad, I use Locoid Lipocream which is what the pedi perscribed, It's been awhile since i have used it. I hope this works for you! Good Luck!
