2 Year Old with a Tic?

My son turned 2 in December. He started shoulder shrugging when he was about 18 months but would only do it periodically. Now at a little over 2 he does it all the time, every day, often many times throughout the day. And not just once but numerous times in almost a weird jerking motion. I have never mentioned it to him or anyone except to my Mom after he was in bed, so I know I have not brought any attention to him doing this, so I am worried that it is going on so long and getting worse. He also is obsessive about many things and is sensory seeking, but otherwise he is developmentally fine. He still wakes frequently at night for some unknown reason, and seems to be in some sort of discomfort. But other than this, he is a perfectly healthy and normal little boy. He is a bit aggressive, but he is a boy and he is two. So I don't know if this is a normal thing some kids go through or not. Thanks!!!!

Well I called the family Dr. and we have an appt. tomorrow. He also does eye blinking but I didn't think much of that either until some of you mentioned it, so I guess it is best to have it checked out. I have known some people with tourettes and so that does not worry me so much, more I am worried about something like epilepsy, or something I don't even know about. So I will let you all know how it goes. Thanks for all the wonderful advice!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone, we saw a neurologist yesterday and he will have an EEG to rule out seizures on Tuesday(she is thinking maybe absence seizures). She thinks the shoulder shrugging is just a tic that could be transient or turn into something like tourette syndrome, but she was not worried about that at all. She was more concerned with his eye blinking and rolling of his eyes which I never even noticed. He did it when she had him hyperventilating. She did say he has some aspergers like traits but she doesn't think enough to have a diagnosis. Anyway, I will have some answers soon. Thanks again!

Hi J.,
It sounds like this could be just a nervous tic or an early sign of tourettes syndrome. I am a 23 year old with tourettes and mine started out similar. I am in no way trying to alarm you... it may not be that at all. Mine started out as minor tics like that when I was young and got progressively more, but I have found that through diet and exercise I can control it. I do not eat sugar or drink caffiene and I stay away from starchy foods. Everyone thinks of tourettes as people uncontrollably yelling curse words and jerking but there are mild forms of it. If it continues I would see your doctor about it. But I would not worry because even if it is tics or tourettes most children grow out of it by the time they are middle school.

Hi, J.:

Try calling Dr. James Stein Chiropractor in Norristown, PA . Ask them if they know about involuntary movements of the shoulder that your son has.

You can look on line.

Hope this helps. Good luck. D.

My three year old niece was just diagnosed with tics. She shrugs her shoulders and rapidly blinks her eyes. She also puckers her lips.
She does not do it all the time. It is more noticable when she is anxious about something. It can either be that she is anxious about something that is happy or something that is bothering her.
She was diagnosed by a neurologist. Maybe that is something you want to look into.

In these situations its difficult to figure out which thing is the cause and which is the symptom... it may be through not sleeping well enough, his system is stressed, which is triggering a neurological response in the 'tic' movement. It could equally be that he's got a well known condition such as tourettes. As a result, it may be sensible to first of all seek assurance from a specialist doctor that it isn't something more severe. After that, as others have suggested, if more serious problems are ruled out it may be that you can treat him more holistically than western medicine usually does. Don't be afraid to do some research yourself and look into alternative methods of treatment - some of which stated by others. Good luck, and trust your instincts.

My thought is toxic overload of some kind. Something is affecting the nervous system.

Heavy metal poisoning can cause toxic overload. Iron is a heavy metal and overload is common in children because it cannot escape- it builds up in tissues. Do not give vitamins with Iron, watch for food with added iron. Iron should never be supplemented without a clear test of deficiency. The added iron and calcium the food industry adds to processed foods actually causes disease because it creates imbalances. Calcium overload is just as bad as calcium deficiency. High calcium levels deplete magnesium, and decent amounts of magnesium is needed for calcium assimilation. So extra calcium can deplete calcium. Just an example how we can't trust those food process labels- what they are adding is not necessarily helping the general public.

Bacteria ,fungi, parasites, can all cause toxic overload in the body. Thier excrement is toxic to us, affecting our central nervous system. We have to process it out. In fact, microbic pathogens must aquire our iron to survive and replicate. So people with High iron levels are a fertile ground for infection and disease process to start.

Drugs like SSRI's , when taken in very high amounts, poison the system and cause shoulder rolling, tics, restless anxiety and the like. The clinical term is called serotonin syndrome. My point is that poisons of some kind will affect the nervous system into these kinds of symptoms.

If pathogens need metals to hide behind and replicate, then getting heavy metals out of the body seems a likely place to start. There are different ways to chelate metals out. There is EDTA, DMPS, DMSA, Alpha lipoic acid, NCD zeolite, and others. Of all the ones I have researched, NCD Zeolite seems to be the safest, easiest one on the body. While most of them pull out several important minerals like magnesium, manganese, etc, zeolite does not, and it's safe for children.

Magnesium is an important mineral for people with tics and tourettes (which are in essence a muscle contraction of sorts). One , because it is a chemical gate blocker and relaxes muscles and nerves, two because it is a metal chelator of some metals as well. It also helps the body with electrical charges.

Other important vit/minerals you should look into is liquid B complex and iodine. You should also lookup swedish bitters.

A naturopath or nutritionalist would be able to help you in this general direction. There are tests for metal poisoning. My experience with most standard medical doctors is that they would try to find a "term" for the tics, IE: tourettes, or OCD. And then you would get sent on your way, or reffered to a "specialist." Labeling a symptom with a clinical label seems to be the goal, with the fix being a drug that will "cover up" symptoms. But this won't get you a cure or answer the basic question, "why" is it happening.

Insomnia is not surprising as it is a common symptom among problems in the nervous system.Serotonin is the neurotransmitter responsible for sleep, agression, pain, appetite, etc.
Vit b6 with magnesium and amino acids can help raise serotonin levels.

This info is only meant as a springboard for your own research.
Please consult a doctor.
I have no vested or monetary interest in any of the substances I have written about.
Best of luck.

Could be myoclonic seizures. I would call your pediatrician to get him checked out as soon as you can. The sooner they are detected, the sooner treatment can start.

I would definitely get it checked out. It sounds neurological. With just the one symptom you may find it is an easy fix. I would not wait, in case there is a more serious underlying problem.

My son started to do a head bob motion and shoulder shrug aroun 3yo, after it went on a while the doctor said it was nothing. Finally he started to say his belly hurt. We have since found out he has a lot of stomach problems. Watch for when it happens, like after he eats or when he is in a stressful situation.

Thanks,

T.
