The soy milk may be unhelpful in this area. I give my son rice milk but recently bought and tried coconut milk.
My son just turned two and as he is ready for potty training...I am not. His bowel movements are going to a problem as he does not have formed stools. He has diarhea almost everytime he goes. I recently tried switching him to soy milk since I was told it could be caused from a milk allergy. Is there any other way to help him be less liquidy without constipating him?

Has the doctor sent any of his BM to the lab to make sure there wasn't something bacterial going on? My son went through that for a month and the doc had us send some to a lab plus start him (after the collection fact) on 1/2 a capsule of culturel mixed in applesauce. There is a reason he has diarrhea...the doctor needs to help you find out what that reason is.
Have you tried to cut back on liquids? So harden his stools?
I know, the pediatricians say you should be giving our little ones so much liquids per day, but that is alot (when they say your little one should have so many wet diapers a day). I know, because I was doing it for about a year.
While she was drinking so much liquids - as recommended - she did have loose, watery stools, but when we cut out the cuppy, they became more solid and we are currently working on potty training. She was also drinking soy milk from her first birthday - still with watery, loose stools. She didnt have allergies, she just liked the taste better.
My little one just turned 3 and has been to the dentist and came out with silver caps on some of her teeth due to cavities from trying to give my little girl as much juice (watered down- 1/2 water, 1/2 juice) as her doctors say she should have. We brushed her teeth regularly, and I was a little late with getting rid of the cuppy.
After her first dentist appointment, we did lose the juice cuppy, and she only had a milk cuppy for nap time - which she drank 8 oz of warm milk before her nap and was done before she went down to sleep, so she didn't take it to bed with her.
Try cutting back on the juices and switching to bigger kid cups whenever you can - you can give him smaller amounts this way. It should help.
Good luck
Will he eat yogurt...I'd give him that if he does b/c that helps regulate the digestive system. Theres also "probiotic" kid drinks called Probugs - they aren't available where I live though, but if you are near a whole foods market you should be able to find them. Before determining its a milk allergy, I'd be sure - talk to an allergist.
Dear L., Have you tried banana and/or rice? They are binding. My best, Grandma Mary
I would not give him soy milk unless advised by a doctor. Soy tends to mess with the immune system and you don't want that with flu season here. My daughter also had problems with loose bowel movements. This is a supplement that I give her. You can find it at any GNC or health food store. It works very well and is a chewable like multi-vitamans.
Its Animal parade brand "acidophi kidz". Its the same kind of supplement that is in the activia yogurt. Good luck .
You really need to check with your doctor before thinking it could be allergies, because it could be a virus too. Things that can cause diarhea without it being a virus are too much fruit. Yep, all that unsoluable fiber can be the culprit too. Apples are especially good at causing loose bowels, especially apple cider. I remember being a kid and drinking 2 glasses of apple cider everyday...Guess what? I got diarhea from it, so I learned to slow down on the cider. You really have to learn how your son's individual body works, so you can balance the food appropriately. My son can't eat much fruit, because it just loosen his stools up too much. What ever you do, do not lighten up on liquids, because diarhea can quickly dehydrate a child. You might even have to give your child Pedialite to keep his electrites up.
I have been in the same situation like you and did not get any help from my pediatrician. I think trying out if eliminating dairy helps the problem is a good idea. You can also use rice milk instead of soy milk. Give it a try for four weeks to see if it helps. I also strongly recommend the idea to use probiotics. Go to Whole Foods or the Vitamine Shoppe, they have several for kids. Consider adding in enzymes and fibers into the mix and see if after 3 months things are better. If this does not help you probably need to find a pediatrician that is willing to take the problem seriously and to run a test call IGG-food sensivities. That is not an allergy test, but a test on the stool to see what foods the body is reacting to. Eliminating those foods while helping the gut heal itself with the probiotics did the trick in our case.
That happened with my son. I was giving him too much juice. water instead helped and instead of giving him a bottle or sippy cup so often i started to give him dry cherios instead if it wasnt meal time.
Hi L.,
I would talk with the doctor, and maybe an allergist and/or pediatric nutritionist. I wouldn't assume your child has an allergy and make a switch without consulting a doctor. If your child is two and has always has liquidy bowel movements, his doctor should know about this. However, that said, I would definitely eliminate juice if you give him that.
I also wonder, why do you feel he is ready for potty training? Is he asking to use the bathroom? Does he know when he needs to go? If he knows when he needs to pee, you can take him and let him, even if he doesn't know when he needs to poop. Do you know for certain that he does not know when he has to poop? He may know, but just have liquidy movements - if you use a seat on the big toilet, that's got to be pleasanter for you than changing those diapers.
Good luck - but I would definitely tackle the issues of the liquedy bm's as a separate issue from anything having to do with toileting him.
Why are you giving him soy milk? has it been advised by your doctor? Loose stools are not because of a milk allergy, it may just be the way hegoes, my son is the same and he has no allergies. Definitely run the soy milk by your doctor. And at just 2 he is probably not yet ready for potty training. You can try but i would recommend waiting a few more months. GOod luck hon
Sometimes if children have constant diarrhea it might also be a gluten allergy or sensitivity. (Wheat, rye, barley, and some oats)
my 2yo has the same type of bowel movements. i took her to the dr. and they said it is something called, "toddler's diarrhea". they told me to only give her water to drink, nothing else. it has helped a lot. give it a try.
