2 Year Old Nap Time

My older daughter just turned 2 in June. For the past week she has not been taking her nap. She still acts tired around nap time, a little cranky, rubbing her eyes, but when I put her down she just plays with her stuffed animals. I notice she lays downs and it even looks like she trys to fall asleep but she just can't. I leave her in her crib for at least two hours so even if she does not sleep she is having quiet time. I also started putting her to bed earlier at night and she does not even fight it. When I put her down at night she is out and she sleeps for about 11-12 hours. I know eventually kids give up naps but i guess I always thought they still took naps in pre-school. I remember having nap time in kindregarden. At what age did your kids stop taking naps? Should I still put her down like I have been even though she is not sleeping?

What can I do next?

My son stopped taking naps at home and at daycare just after he turned two when he was home with me. He still has quiet time for two hours during the afternoons when he is home with us on the weekends. We found it interesting that when he started Pre-K in September (he's 3 1/2 and goes to a full day Pre-K program the school district I work for has for teachers) that he actually is taking naps during the 90 minute "rest period" in the afternoons. He still isn't taking them on the weekends, but he does nap at school almost every day now.
I wouls still continue to put her down or have some sort of quiet time. It will allow for her to re-fuel for the rest of the day.

Children - especially little ones - need their naps (at least mine do!). Try getting curtains that are dark for her room. Sometimes it is hard for little ones to sleep with a bright room. Also I would take the stuffed animals out that she is playing with. Give her her blankey...and turn on a fan for background noise...or soft music. Is she your only child? Sometimes this makes a difference....only bc if my little one doesn't get a nap he will be cranky with his 2 sisters when they get home from school. Lol. :) Good luck!

Don't give up! This is the age where they're testing their limits and seeing what they can get away with. A 2 year old needs a nap. Especially one who acts tired and cranky. My kids all did this at her age. I just put them into bed my bed where there were no toys. They usually fell asleep, but if they didn't they agreed to an early bedtime.
My kids are 3, 4, 6. The 3-year old still naps, the 4 year old stopped napping when he turned 4 and the 6-year old stopped at 4-1/2. Toward the end of naptime, I asked them to lie down for an hour of "quiet time".
Good luck.

If she is truly not falling asleep-I would keep the quiet time (shorten it though maybe) and keep that as part of her daily routine. Especially if she is sleeping 11-12 hours a night she probably won't be tired enough for a nap (some kids need less sleep..)
