Hi.

My 2 year old boy does not want to nap though he is very tired. I try to put him in the crib but he tries to get out. Any advice will be very much appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone of you for your help. We tried the quiet time for a week and it helped. It was a bit of a struggle. Now he is back to taking a nap late in the afternoon. Thanks again.

Hi S.,
My 2 year old went through the same thing (she's now 2 1/2). I thought to myself, no way is she already giving up her naps!! She went 6 days straight without having her afternoon nap. And all of my other friends went through the same thing with their 2 year old. Just keep being consistent and put him down, maybe tell him he can have a couple books to read (that worked for my friend). I'm not sure what time you put him down for bed and how long his night time sleep is but he may be trying to transition to a later bedtime. I started to put my daughter to bed a half hour later. After the sixth day of no nap she went back to taking her nap. She still naps today 1 1/2- 2 1/2 hours. That age still needs naps..so try to stick with it. good luck!

Did you try massaging his head? Very lightly and slow. Also, if he will let you, his ears. I play spa music in the room.

Hi S.,
I also have a 2 yr old son and when he started doing this same thing, at around 19 months, I adjusted his bed time and then allowed him to take a sippy cup with water and one toy to nap with. I will admit that he doesn't always take a nap anymore, but I think thats because he may have outgrown that particular time of day napping. He plays outdoors and is very physically active so that when bed time comes he has his bath, brushes his teeth and after story time - off to bed he goes. ( I got these tips from my sister-in-law, they worked for me, so I hope they work for you) .good luck!

When my son went through this, we stopped calling it nap time and called it "quite time". He could read books or play with a toy, but he had to stay in bed. Most of the time he fell asleep, but even when he didn't he got some rest.
