Last year in August my daughter got really sick while we were camping with mainly just a high fever. Ever since than we have had reaccuring mild fevers. We have had her in and out of the doctors and hospitals....I am concerned because they keep just saying it is viral......yet there are no other symptoms and she continues to have them She will get really hot and be down and then I have to alternate tylenol and motrin. Sometimes they last 1 days, sometimes they last over 3. She has had 3 catherters and nothing, she has had blood work twice. Still nothing. Anyone had this with their child if so what is it ??? Where did you go to find answers our daughter has had these random fevers sometimes three times in a month. I am not sure how to respond to answers. I really appreciate any and all feedback as these random fevers sometimes over 104 have me concerned....The more experience I hear from other parents the better information I can look into or give to the doctors to maybe get some answers.
I really appreciate all the feed back its so nice of you all to take time and respond.. She is going on her 4rth day and has another doctor appt today again. I have a notebook with questions now, and I am pushing for her to see a specialists. Thank You all so much

Hi N.-

One of my kiddos was 'micro aspirating' as one of her issues...just enough to make her lungs 'mad'...but not enough to give her a full blown pneumonia.

We did...for a period of several months, keep her dairy free. And in her case, it helped.

Now, years later, she is able to eat dairy with no concerns...

Just something to consider.

Best luck!

Our youngest set of twin grandsons had this fever thing and they also had the febrile seizures from fevers. Finally after a year of awful hospital/doctor trips and trying everything they saw an allergist who gave them a shot to boost the immune system and no more fevers or seizures since. I don't know if this was the cure but seems to be. You may check it out and see if her immune system is low.

My daughter was the same way! She just turned three but when she was two the Dr figured out it was her bladder and kidneys. She had a backflow of pee going into her right kidney. Turns out after an ultra sound her right uthrea. Had two tubes causing the backflow. She had surgery to correct it in Dec. They said it was a birth defect. So far so good, no more random fevers. Good luck. I hope I might have helped.

I don't really have any advice but I just wanted to let you know this can happen! My daughter is five and a half and from about age 3 to 5 she would about every 2-3 months get a HIGH fever. I would keep her home from school expecting something to come with it, and it never did. Some of the times with the fever she would be bouncing off the walls wondering why she couldn't go to school. We also went to a dr and they didn't seem to have any big concerns (mostly since she wasn't acting sick not sure if that is your case or not) I don't think she has had a fever now for several months. I read a couple of things online but I can't remember and since it wasn't a real medical site I probably wouldn't recommend it anyways. I hope it is nothing serious. I just always had to give in to my mommy intuition and even though she was hot (and her heart would race) she was fine. I think I even posted about it on this site!

They may need to check for autoimmune diseases too, like Rheumatoid Arthritis (common in kids) or Lupus (more rare). If you have noticed any joint swelling or limping, that could be another sign of RA.

I think you are doing the right thing here. The internet can be a very powerful tool. I've watched way too many episodes of "Mystery Diagnosis" - each episode it seems that parents say they never gave up wondering and that the internet was a help in finding a doctor or possible illnesses for their child. Just make sure you are also using reliable sources.

That being said - I agree with Robin from Oakland. Do you have a good Children's Hospital close to home in Michigan and have you tried going there? High fevers are scary. Something else to think about - is she eating and drinking normally during these fever spurts and does she have energy to play normally?

Praying that you get some answers soon!

Don't know if they checked her neck, but at times my son would get fevers and the only thing they'd find was swollen glands in his neck. In the front of neck on both sides of the thyroid gland. They were like marble size. But they wouldn't give antibiotics unless his throat was red or ears were infected. It usually went away. He did have seasonal allergies and they thought the glands would get swollen and try to fight off an infection. I hope your daughter gets better.

Sounds like a parasite-have you tried a hospital for children? If not-may be your best bet. Take care!

This winter my 7 yoa daughter had a bout of fever with a bad cold. She had the runny nose and congestion and developed a cough. About 3 weeks later, she still had the cough and one day woke up again with a fever. We took her to the Dr thinking she had bronchitis or something. Our Dr listened to her lungs but said they were clear and then asked about her head congestion and diagnosed it as sinus infection. He said the cold the first time was viral but since this was her second bout of fever not too far apart that it had probably become a bacterial infection. She was put on a 10 day dose of antibiodics. It took the full 10 days for her cough to go away but we haven't had the cough or the fever since. So...if the fever is somewhat close together...maybe they do need to just try antibiodics? I'm not a big anitbiotic pusher, but it helped my daughter.
Hope you and the Dr's get it figured out!
J.

Our daughter was the same between 1 and 2 yrs. old. Except for her bloodwork showed a sky high white blood count to indicate a bad infection somewhere. Like one of your other posters, our daughter was referred for some testing and it was found that a little tube problem wasn't allowing her bladder to fully empty and sort of "backwashing" to the kidneys (I believe ... it's been yrs. ago). Her hospital outpatient evaluation didn't warrant surgery because of its severity but we had to manage it with a daily medication for a few years with annual testing. The finally suggested her severity seemed low enough to stop meds. Since then, no problems at all and she apparently out grew that problem and the tube further developed.

If she's had up to 3 fevers/mo for a year, and the pedi isn't concerned enough to send her to specialists to get to the bottom of it, I'd get a new pedi. They're not all created equal- ask everyone you know for a recommendation. If you know any nurses, start there- they usually know who the best doctors are. Also, check doctor rating websites, like ratemds.com
Hang in there, someone will figure it out =o)
