There is allergy medicine they can take at that age, zytrec I think. Ask the pharmacy, that will dry up the mucus. Or go back to the doctor and ask for some albuteral and a nebulizer, that will stop the cough.
My 2.5 year old son has a nasty cold. Was in to the doc today and told it is viral. He is coughing literally non stop every 1-2 minutes at most, even all night long. He is unable to sleep. He's usually an excellent sleeper.
Currently trying vicks vapor rub on bottoms of his feet and on chest/back, honey and similar toddler cough products with honey and other natural ingredients, humidifier, propping his head/head of his mattress.
Nothing is helping.....please help if any other ideas?!

My doctor allows me to give my children Triaminic Nighttime Cold and Cough. At two years, I gave them a 1/2 teaspoon (according to the measuring cup that comes with the medicine). My kids were also on the higher end of the weight percentiles so that may have something to do with it. Worth asking your doctor if it is ok to use though. It helps quiet my kids cough after a day or two and has kept us from many doctor visits as well. Other remedies to try, sitting in a hot steamy bathroom helps. I also give my kids suckers or orange juice to help coat the throat.
My son was diagnosed with reactive airway disorder around 18 months which was treated with albuterol breathing treatments using a nebulizer. His cough sound very tight and dry. This is when I would use the nebulizer. If it was a loose sounding cough then I would use the cough medicine. In both instances the cough would usually last three days, with it being worse at night. Finally, we had his adenoids taken out last Spring and it has made all the difference in the world. He still gets a cold or cough every now and then, but not nearly as often. I hope your son feels better soon!

We did all of that too, but the only thing that helped was that the doctor prescribed an inhaler with a spacer/mask. Our son does not have asthma, but we were told to use it if he could not sleep from the coughing.
Benadryl, if you're comfortable with that.
It's not tasty, but here is what I do when I cough, sneeze, have a sore throat, or have a congestion.
Boil a tall cup of water. Add the hot water to a half a lemon (juice only) and 1 table spoon of oregano in a tea basket. Let it brew for 3 minutes, then add that tea to 1 spoon of honey.
I sleep well that first night and by the third night it is gone. My daughter hates it, but she sips about 1/8 cup each day. Because she won't drink too much, it takes a few days longer, but that first night she does sleep. No one in my house has seen a doctor for flu/cold symptoms for years.
Because he is so young, If it were my 2.5 year old, I would dilute it quite a bit. I would also put it in a sippy cup. At full strength the lemon my be too acidic for his tummy.
I hope he feels better soon.
A saline nasal spray will help ease congestion at the start of the night.
The children's allergy medicines will help too.
we use zarbees all natural children's honey cough relief. It was available in our local CVS so it should be fairly easy to find.

I would take him to urgent care or ER while he's coughing at night, or to the doctor in the day again, and have them check him out again and maybe he needs a breathing treatment if the coughing is coming from like a bronchitis type thing. Be sure your humidifier is cleaned regularly and don't give him milk before bedtime, only water to thin mucous and yet it may not be from mucous. Have someone else check him out.
My nephew had this symptom and the doctor said it was viral too. Within a couple of days the coughing got so severe he started to vomit with it. When he went back to the doctor they tested him for pertussis. Two days later his test came back positive and he was treated.
My daughter had the non stop cough too but we were lucky that the doctor was able to hear a wheeze so they put her on antibiotic for walking pneumonia. 2 days later we found out it was whooping cough. (That was in August and she is still coughing).
FYI... The CDC told me the only kids that had gotten whooping cough to date (August) were kids that were vaccinate. Ugh!!!
Take him back to the doctors and ask for him to be tested for whooping cough. My daughters cough did not sound terrible at first but she was like your son and just could not stop coughing for more than a minute if that.
