Is there such a thing as "growing pains"? My 2 year old son has been complaining that his legs hurt. He will ask me to massage them and after a few hours he will ask again. Now he is complaining that his body hurts, he will lie on the floor so I can massage his back. Have others gone through this or is this something I should bring up to his doctor?

What can I do next?

Bring it up if you're concerned but my daughter had that and so did I when I was a child. My MD suggested massage with Arnica Oil - available at Whole Foods, I believe.

My son has complained about growing pains and I did massage he as well. Allergies and arthritis can also cause pain. I know he does need attention from you but what does your gut tell you? I would have him checked just encase. Just asking this question tells me that you are a good concerned parent. I hope he is fine and it is just the quick growth that little people experience.

It could very well be growing pains... or maybe a lack of a vitamin but I would also call your doctor to be on the safe-side.

I agree with Nicole. Yes it could be growing pains but you never know so its better to be safe than sorry.

I have 3 daughters and my older one at age 5 would have growing pains because she grew a few inches in a short time.

Growing pains are very real. My granddaughter has them every now and then. She wakes up in the middle of the night in pain, usually in her legs. I don't think a doctor will tell you to do anything more than what you've already been doing, with the exception of maybe some tylenol (which I've never had to do). What I've read is to massage and give lots of love and hugs. I slather on the lotion to make the massage even better for her.

There's no serious injury accompanying the pain, just all of her "stuff" trying to fit into and stretching out her little body. Then a week or so later, if I measure her on the doorway again, she's shot up a bit.

My son is now 4 and has complained from time to time about his legs hurting since he was about 2 years old. He wakes up sometimes crying that his legs hurt. My daughter (2 years old) just recently woke up also complaining "owies" and holding her legs and feet. This might be growing pains, but one thing to consider is this-- if it happens only at night, check in and see how the child is sleeping. I've noticed that my son sometimes sleeps face down with his bottom in the air and his legs tucked under. I think his legs actually may be falling asleep. When I catch him in that position, I'll either roll him over (if he's asleep) or remind him that his legs might fall asleep and he shouldn't sleep that way (if he's still awake).

Good luck.

I read you post and I couldn't help smile. My son is 4 and since he was 3 I have been massaging his legs because he says it hurts him. I checked with his doctor and he did confirm it was growing pains. He said that especially boys go through growing pains because they grow in spurts.

I used to have terrible growing pains when I was younger. My brother did too. A heating pad helps, as does massage. He's not making stuff up - he probably really does hurt. You can ask your doc, but it's probably not a big deal.

It is normal, even my 12 year old still complains about them. Have him drink lots of water, make sure he is getting lots of calcium. I have my kids stretch and take a hot shower. Plopping your two year old in the bathtub helps distract them and also feels good.
It never hurts to bring it up at a well-baby check-up. But IMO what he is experiencing is normal. =)

E.,
I surely don't mean to sound like the "gloom and doom", but I really want to be sure that you talk to your doctor about it. I just talked to a coworker yesterday who has a 3 year old granddaughter with leukemia. My coworker said that her granddaughter often complaing about her body hurting. Again, I don't mean to alarm you, but I don't want you to not trust your instincts and just write it off as "growing pains" either.
Take care and good luck,
K.

YES, there is such a thing as growing pains. All three of my boys had or have it. My youngest is 5 and he is going through it now as we speak. My 7 year old used to wake up all the time from leg crampsand back aches. His body was growing. I took him to the doc, the doc couldn't find anything wrong at all. We changed eating habits to make sure it wasn't allergies, took him to an allergist..not that either. Even changed laundry detergent...nope. I was in a tissy, I thought that something must be wrong with him....something. Well, it turns out that he was growing so fast. So finally we gave him motrin at night and TADA, he slept. We just did this for a week every other night (1x only) with food and YEAHHHH. So, yes there is such a thing as growing pains.

My son is 61/2 and has always had "growing pains." The best advice I can give is to have him eat some bananna before bed. The potassium really helps, as does motrin. My son asks me to rub his legs. I remember getting them, and it is quite painful.

Good luck.
