2 Y/o with Potty Problems

Ok, so this is a bit yucky, but I am at a loss. My 2 y/o little guy has between 3 and 4 dirty diapers each morning and 1 in the evening. All of the them are pretty loose. Not diarrhea, but just not formed. He has a reasonably healthy diet and only drinks 2 cups of milk and 1 cup of juice a day. Otherwise he drinks ice water. This seems a bit excessive and I am wondering how I will EVER potty train with him going so often.

With that being said, I have food allergies (wheat and eggs). I am concerned that he may have allergies too, but I haven't seen any of the other symptoms.

Am I over reacting or do you think that he is going too frequently? I don't even know how to really bring this up with our pediatrician.

What can I do next?

what do you mean by his poop is not formed?
In a toddler/baby... the consistency of poop, is ideally like oatmeal. This was told to me/Hubby by a Pediatric Gastroenterologist. So, it is neither hard (balls) nor like runny liquid. But like oatmeal.

In a diaper, poop will not look "formed" because it is not dropping into a toilet... in a tube shape. Sorry for the graphic/yucky description. But that is what happens. In a diaper, poop will just be a clump of something.

So, this is either normal for him, nor not. And it also depends on what they eat each day. Has he always pooped a lot? Or is this something new? Is he perhaps sick with a bug?

I think, just ask your Pediatrician. It is nothing to be awkward about. They hear about all kinds of things. That is their job. And if you have a concern, you should ask them.

All the best,
Susan

I say go with your instinct and bring it up to the pediatrician. Your history of the food allergies is enough of a reason to be concerned, although at this young age the only thing they might do is an elimination diet. I doubt they would do actual allergy testing. I would definitely be concerned about the number of BMs a day. In a newborn, that's one thing. In a two year old, that seems pretty abnormal. Good luck!

Keep a food journal for about two weeks and also put on it when he poops and when his diaper is just wet. Also incude the amout of liquid he is getting eat time as well as guess how much food like 1/4 cup of cooked carrots or 8oz of milk. You do not need to be exact but every little bit will help. Then the next time that you are supposed to go to the Dr. take the journal with you and show to his Dr.
I have had to keep for journals for my daughter who at the time was 4 due to migrains and then later because her excema was so out of control. I also had to keep a journal of what color of clothes she wore. Come to find out she is allergic to blue dyes. She can not wear blue jeans or any blue clothes or she breaks out. It is hard to find pants for her to wear that are not jeans and I am tired of sweat pants.
Good luck.

My first thought was to cut back on the juice. My son's pediatrician told us that the sugars in juice often act as a laxative.

But definitely don't be shy to talk to your pediatrician about it. Good luck!

He might have an allergy to dairy but it's hard to tell without getting him tested. However, it doesn't sound like he does because usually, he's have diarrhea if he was allergic to milk or he'd be breaking out into a rash. (One of my girls developed a dairy allergy at 2 yrs old but then grew out of it).
As far as the potty training, you just have to put him on the toilet at least once an hour and stick to it. He might be a little young still but my kids were all daytime trained by the time they were 2 and night time trained by the time they were 3. Regarding his diet, just make sure he eats lots of fruits and veggies. If he won't eat veggies you can blend them up with fruits into "milk shakes". That way, he won't taste them but he's getting the vitamins.
