2 Questions: Metabolic Testing & Slow Weight Loss

My nutritionist/dietitian suggested that I get a formal Body Composition & Metabolic test. Apparently the machine measures your body's basal metabolic rate so that from there, you can get a better idea of how many calories you should be consuming to maximize weight loss. I think I'm going to give it a shot. Insurance doesn't cover it, but it's only $100 for the test, which is worth it if I get some answers.

My first question is, have you had this done? Did it help you?

I've been losing weight since September of 2010 when I got my lap-band and have lost an average of 1.5 pounds per week. I've lost a total of 96 pounds so far. I eat a high protein diet of 1300 calories/day (which was recommended by both my surgeon and my nutritionist) of whole, unprocessed foods, and I exercise 30-60 minutes daily (elliptical trainer). I keep a food diary and share it with my nutritionist and even she is stumped as to why I'm not losing weight faster.

I had a suspicion that it was my birth control so I stopped taking that (we are also TTC), but haven't noticed a difference.

Do you have any suggestions as to why my weight loss would be so slow? Just looking for some ideas from some Moms that may have experience in this area.

And before you mention it, I have an appointment with my doctor for a full physical & blood test on Monday to check everything and make sure I'm all good medically.

What can I do next?

Your weight loss per week sounds about right. The only other thing I can think - which your doctor should check on Monday - is your thyroid. If that is slowing down, that will make it really hard to lose weight. Just ask your doctor to make sure they check that with your blood work. Good job on the weight loss so far !

I'm thinking of doing the same. I have heard great success stories. My doctor recommended it. He has had some doctor friends & patients do it, with success. I spend so much money at the gym, between classes that cost extra & child care, I can't see spending extra money.

1.5 pounds a week sounds perfect. Most doctors don't like to see a loss of more than 2 pounds per week. as long as the weight is still coming off most weeks, I would not worry. I also would not go below 1200 cals no matter what the tests say. Best of luck with your journey!
