I was wondering if I can add baby liquid vitimans and iron into formula. Do I have to add it into breast milk that i pumped into a bottle?

What can I do next?

I was told by my OB and Pedi that I did not have to give liquid vit or iron to my baby because I was doing both formula and breastmilk. If you are taking vitamins then the baby is getting the stuff that it needs from that and also what it needs from the formula.

You should only add them if your doctor has advised you to do so. If he/she has, you can add to some formulas and you can also add it to expressed breastmilk. But again, tlak to your doctor. Depending on the type of iron or vitamins prescribed, he/she will know best.

You don't need to add anything to breastmilk or formula unless your Pediatrician has advised you to do so. Our son (now 11 months) was diagnosed anemic at his 9 month check up. It was then that our Pedi suggested that I add the iron vitamins to his diet. I would ask your Pedi to be sure, but at our dr office, they don't even check for that until the 9 month visit. Also - when we started the supplements - I was told NOT to add to the milk, as it makes it taste funny and can stain teeth (when they get them).

I doubt you would be giving your infant vitamins w/o talking to your pedi already so I am guessing you are asking because your 2 month old is spitting out the vitamins. If so, we had this same problem. Our daughter wouldn't even drink them in a bottle mixed with breastmilk (we never tried formula). What I would do was put the vitamins in a bottle nipple...start feeding her when she was hungry, pull her off after a minute, give her the vitamins in the nipple, and then put her right back on (breast or bottle) before she realized what was happening. It didn't work every time but eventually she got used to the taste of the vitamins and it got better. By the time she was 9 months she had no problem drinking the vitamins straight out of the dropper!
Good luck!

There's no reason at all to add anything to formula. It's already fortified with everything for wee ones. I wouldn't even worry about adding it to the breast milk either, as your wee one should be getting everything they need right now from you...other than maybe Vitamin D...but that is best obtained with just a wee bit of exposure to the sunlight. Even having them by the window for just a few mins a day will help with that significantly.

I'm not a doctor but I would imagine you could overdose your 2 month old by giving her additional vitamins and especially iron. My DD had low iron count at 18 months and I had to give her iron - we had to be very careful with the dosage. You really shouldn't give your baby anything like that until they are 6 months or even a year old unless your pedi suggests it for certain conditions. Their little bodies cannot process things adults and children over one can.

Formula has all the necessary vitamins in it. If you are breastfeeding ONLY, your baby is not getting any vitamin D. You need to give vitamin D drops. Regardless of advice you get here, you should probably still talk to your pediatrician about your baby's needs.

did your dr. tell you to do this? I think formula has stuff so they dont recom. adding vitimans. and there are some studies that say if you nurse you need to suppliment and some say you dont need to. I did not bc I was on the fence w/ the study after reading it and after I tasted the vitimans myself I thought I was going to barf.....and my LO would fight me and cry bc she hated it too. Short answer though sorry LOL: you can add it to milk but it does not really mask the taste, I tried it.

I too would ask your Dr. I breasfed and didn't add anything - not even vitamin D. I know formulas are even more fortified (not dependent on the mom's diet) than breastmilk, so I definitely wouldn't add to formula. I'm w/ the others ask the Dr.

I agree with others, you should only add them if your pediatrician has advised you too. If that is the case check with their office on the correct dosage and how to administer the vitamins.

Neither formula nor breastmilk should need vitamins added; they already have what your baby needs.

My doc recommended Poly-Visol within a week after my daughter's birth. I was breast feeding so I gave it to her in a bottle with the breast milk. I don't see why it would be any different for formula. Spread it out though because sometimes the babies don't like the taste so its better if its just a little at a time.

Most formulas should have enough iron and vitamins in them, you don't need to add more. You also don't need to put any in the breastmilk. Is there a reason you think your baby isn't getting enough nutrients already? I would trust that breastmilk or formula will give your baby what they need. Talk to you doctor if you baby has health concerns.

you don't have to add it to your breastmilk- your baby is getting all the vitamins it needs from your milk. as far as formula goes most formulas have the right percentage of iron in them. theres an organic formula "natures own with iron" that is very good if you feel other formulas don't give enough. good luck!
