2 Month Old Coughing

I have been sick with a stuffy/runny nose and cough, my 2 year old also has the cough and now my 2 month old just woke up coughing. It doesn't sound very good, but of course neither does mine or my 2 year old's. He seems to be breathing okay at the moment (he is sleeping upright on my chest). He went from 9-3am last night without eating, which would be great, but it was unusual for him. I fed him at 3 and he spit up (which is also unusual) and then he woke up at 5:30 and i tried to feed him, but he kept coughing and didn't eat for more than a minute. And of course he has to start it way early in the morning on a Sunday, not in the middle of the day on a weekday. My pediatrician doesn't have office hours on Sundays. I am sure they have someone on call, but i don't want to wake anybody up if it's not necessary. I am just worried with him being so little. Is it something to be really concerned about? what should i do?
*he currently does not have a fever, and has since ate some without coughing. My sister has 6 kids and they all had the cough that we seem to have. She said i should wait to take him to the doctor until he would get a fever. Until that he doesn't have an infection and there's nothing they can do.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I called the nurse. She said to bring him in if his fever goes over 101 or he has trouble sleeping, or he seems to be having trouble nursing (like he has to break to catch his breath), breathing rapidly or has to make an effort with his chest muscles to breathe. Other than that since we all have colds, it will just have to run its course, about 7-10 days she said. I can just elevate his crib, and give him 1-2oz of water to help keep the mucuos or whatever thin so he can get it out easily. And just to watch him since he's so tiny.

I would take your baby to an Urgent Care or to whichever medical professional you have access to on a Sunday. When a doctor is "on call" they expect to get called, that is their job. A 2 month-old cannot go very long without eating before they can get dehydrated and that is dangerous.

You need to take the baby in and have his lungs listened to...don't worry about waking someone up...it's all part of their job.

Dear B.:

There is a called MB8 Expectorant Cough Syrup that is now being prescribed by many doctors instead of the codeine forms. It has been around for 20 years. it is all natural and virtually never fails. It may take 1 or 2 weeks to fully eliminate the cough and in some cases a little longer.

It may not be appropriate for your 2 month old but I have heard 2 year olds can use half the label dosage 3 to 4 times a day. It also have immune stabilizer in the formula.

My 5 year old loves the product and it has never failed us.

I think you should take him in to see the doctor on Monday. When they're that young with such a bad cough it's prudent.

Take him to the doctor. He is two months old. He could have croup, pnemonia, bronchitis, upper respiratory infection. Take them both to the doctor. It does not sound good. I would take them to the doctors fever or not. They can not tell you what is wrong but why be miserable?

I'd have to disagree with your sis on this one. Minor coughs, even ones that barely affect us adults and that seem as not a big deal for toddlers can cause havoc with a small baby's still developing lungs - especially when they are younger than a few months. Most likely the baby is fine, but we have had the experience with one of my sons that he wasn't and really struggled. Better be safe than sorry - call them first thing in the morning just to get him checked out. Good luck and hope it clears up soon!

PS: My mom always reminds me part of why we pay our docs is for them to be on call when there are urgent issues and for them to help guide us in our medical decisions. I have learned not to hesitate to call them when I am in doubt - even if I wait a few hours:)

Sounds like we have the same thing running through our house. Rather than going to see the doctor, since it sounds like they may not have any solutions for you (unless the cough turns into something more), you can always call the nurses at your ped's office, during regular office hours, and they can suggest some over-the-counter things to help with the cough. It's so hard these days, now that they've removed the OTC cough meds for kids from the market. But your ped's office may have some alternative remedies for you, which the nurse can talk to you about. That's what we did and it's been helping.
