2 1/2 Year Old Is Involuntarily Flipping over His Tongue

Does anyone have experience with a toddler involuntarily flipping over their tongue? (or twisting it, really) It doesn't seem to happen at any particular time or during a specific activity, but I'm wondering if it's something that we should look into. Thanks.

What can I do next?

Hi J.
I'm a speech therapist. i suggest you contact the Early Intervention program in your area and request an evaluation. the evalaution is free and covers overall development, speech, fine and gross motor skills. you want to make sure that his behavior does not affect his speech or eating ability

Hi J.,

I have 2 1/2 year old twin girls and one of my daughters does exactly the same thing. She can flip her tongue and twists it where it looks like a cork screw. At first I freaked out, but then my husband showed me he can do the same thing. I really think it is a genetic thing and that they are just amused that they can do it.

My mom can do that. It seems like a genetic thing, like being able to curl your tongue into a burrito. She certainly doesn't have a speech delay. I doubt that's anything to worry about - but it makes a cool trick!

My daughter did that, but it was voluntarily, and she was much older than 2 1/2. I agree with the speech therapist, get your child checked out.

I can do that, have been able to since I was a baby. I didn't have any speech delays or growing problems. It is generational on my end. If you are concerned see your doc and maybe they will be able to tell you if you should worry or not.

I can do that. Most of my family can do that too.
